Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given chart illustrates the number of visitors who continuously visited the Caryl Island and newly visitors of Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the chart gives information of amount of people vertically and variation of years horizontally that's beginning from 2000 to 2008. There are two colored lines;blue represents the first time visitors and red shows returning visitors. There is a clear uptrend for the visitors who visited this Island several times as they enjoyed it. The trend of new or first time visitors has declined initialy then increased gradually.

The highest ratio of individuals among both is from returning visitors about 15500 in nearby 2006 and the lowest point is approximately three thousand in 2000.

In conclusion,it seems that people who visited Caryl Island in a consistent way is more than the persons who are going to visit this Island first time. It might be due to less advertisement and less people know about the Island but who once visited this place create a mindset to visit it again and again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the line graph, such as the overall upward trend for both first-time and returning visitors, and successfully identifies key data points like the peak for returning visitors around 2006. However, some aspects of the task are only partially addressed. For instance, the overview tends to describe the mechanics of the graph ("giving information of amount of people vertically and variation of years horizontally") rather than summarising the broader statistical trends. Furthermore, the final paragraph includes speculative explanations for the data ("It might be due to less advertisement") which go beyond objective reporting. To move up, the response needs a clearer, more focused overview and a more fully developed selection of data comparisons without unnecessary speculation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows a basic framework of organisation with an introduction, body, and conclusion, and attempts to link ideas using cohesive devices like "Overall" and "In conclusion". However, the logical progression is at times disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical cohesion. Referencing and linking between sentences can be repetitive, and paragraphing is slightly unconventional, mixing overview elements and detailed data points together. To achieve a higher band, the information must be arranged with a clearer overall progression, ensuring that cohesive devices connect ideas smoothly without drawing attention to themselves, and that paragraphs have distinct, logical functions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts to use less common items and descriptive phrases such as "uptrend", "gradually", and "consistent way". However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as "newly visitors", "amount of people vertically", and "highest ratio of individuals". Spelling and word formation errors occasionally distract the reader. To improve, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary and exercise greater precision in word choice and collocation, ensuring that terms like proportions or visitor types are expressed naturally and accurately in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in sentence architecture, article usage, and prepositions, such as in the sentences describing the axes and trends ("the chart gives information of amount of people" and "visitors who visited this Island several times as they enjoyed it"). Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas, are also present. To reach a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate more consistent control over complex grammatical patterns, ensuring that errors do not impede the overall flow of meaning.
