Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, being significantly short of the 150-word word count (coming in at 114 words after excluding copied prompt text). While it attempts to address the task by mentioning both categories of visitors, the information provided is very limited and contains factual inaccuracies. For example, the overview claims incorrectly that total visitors were 16,000, and the description of data trends contains misread figures, such as stating returning visitors reached 14,000 in 2006 when the chart indicates around 15,200. The response touches upon the main features but lacks a fully developed overview and fails to make all relevant comparisons, resulting in only a partial and minimal response to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is divided into short paragraphs, but the overall organization lacks a clear progression and logical flow. While some basic transition markers or paragraph breaks are attempted, the sequencing of information is disjointed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are either absent, repetitive, or inaccurate. For instance, the transition between sentences feels abrupt, and the grouping of data into paragraphs does not follow a clear analytical structure. Information and ideas are not arranged coherently enough to guide the reader smoothly through the graph's data, reflecting basic organizational skills.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student relies on basic, repetitive vocabulary such as 'visitors', 'island', 'increased', and 'fall'. There are noticeable word choice and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'visitied' (spelling), 'drammatically' (spelling), and awkward collocations like 'first time visit'. While the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey a very basic meaning, the frequent spelling slips and lack of a wider range of synonyms prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the number of visitors were' instead of 'was', and 'it falls to 4000 in 2002 and increase to 10000' (tense shift). Punctuation errors, such as spaces before commas, are also present. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over basic grammatical patterns.
