Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the line graph, providing an overview and mentioning key trends such as the upward movement of both series and the peak values. However, some of the information is inadequately reported or inaccurate; for instance, the text claims that first-time visitors were 'equal numbers' to returning visitors in 2000, which is incorrect as the values were 8,000 and 3,000 respectively. Furthermore, details regarding the trajectory of returning visitors in 2008 contain inaccuracies, stating it fell to nearly 12,000 when the graph shows 13,400. The ideas are limited and lack precise data reporting, placing this criterion at the targeted level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on each visitor type. However, the overall progression is sometimes hindered by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections, such as 'then it contradict with other returned visitors'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, making the flow bumpy. Referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in relation to the figures. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical links within paragraphs require better management to achieve a clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and just minimally adequate for the task. There are several noticeable word-choice, spelling, and word-form errors, such as 'Isaland', 'upto its lowest point', 'surged' instead of surge, and 'grow in the gradual manner'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'escalated' and 'approximated', but these attempts are marred by inaccuracies in collocation and form. These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the attempts at complexity are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and awkward clause structures, such as 'returned tourist had lowest travellers' and 'having nearly 12000 tourist'. Punctuation is also inconsistently handled. These frequent errors in grammar and structure require the reader to slow down and cause noticeable strain, placing the grammatical accuracy at this specific level.
