Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the line graph, making relevant comparisons between first-time and returning visitors. An overview is provided, noting the general upward trend for overall visitor numbers and the fluctuation of returning visitors. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precision. For instance, the student states that first-time visitors reached 6000 and 8000 in 2004 and 2006 respectively, but misreads the 2006 figure slightly (which is actually around 9300), and the summary of data points tends to list figures mechanically rather than fully synthesising the trends. To reach a higher level, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly, highlight key peaks and troughs with greater accuracy, and extend the comparisons between the two categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each category of visitor. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, relying on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'after that' and 'finally'. Referencing and logical progression within sentences could be smoother to avoid choppy transitions. For example, sentences like 'Firstly, it declined to 4000 in 2002 after that it start rising...' exhibit mechanical linking. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is clearer and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to data reporting such as 'declined', 'rising', and 'maximum'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'notioced', 'visted', 'returned visitor' instead of 'returning visitor', and 'finallyn'. These errors do not heavily impede communication, but they reflect a limited and somewhat inaccurate control of lexical features. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise use of vocabulary, correct word forms for adjectives and nouns, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use subordinate clauses and time markers. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'the individuals who visited there increases', 'it start rising', and missing articles such as 'in Caryl island' instead of 'on Caryl island'. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher level of grammatical control. To improve, the writer must focus on consistent verb tenses, correct singular and plural agreement, and accurate preposition use.
