Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response only partially addresses the prompt and contains significant confusion regarding the data presented in the line graph. The writer mixes up the trends for first-time visitors and returning visitors, leading to an inaccurate overview and body paragraphs that contradict the visual data. For instance, the student states that returning visitors had a dramatic decrease in 2002 and a sudden rise, whereas the graph actually shows returning visitors shooting up sharply in 2002 while first-time visitors dropped. Furthermore, the information is repetitive, with multiple overview-style summaries included near the beginning and the end. To move towards a higher band, the response must accurately report and compare the key features of the data without confusing the two data series, and avoid unnecessary repetition.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation, but the overall progression of information is hindered by poor referencing and confusing switching between data sets. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical structure breaks down because the body paragraphs reiterate general summaries rather than methodically reporting specific data points. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the redundant transition 'In contrast, the returning tourist also had a dramatic decrease' followed by contradictory claims. To improve coherence and achieve a higher band, ideas need to be logically sequenced with clearer transitions, ensuring that each paragraph presents distinct, well-ordered information without duplicating overview statements.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'tourist came to see the Island', 'visitors popped significantly', and 'interest were down for the public to show-up'. Some word forms and plurals are also awkward or incorrect, like 'returning tourist' used instead of plural forms or nouns. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a very basic meaning, these frequent lexical inaccuracies and simplistic expressions restrict the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to include precise reporting verbs and accurate topic-specific collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting complex forms. There are recurring issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'the very first time travelers showcased increase' and 'numbers were increased significantly upto 10000'. Prepositions inside grammatical patterns and punctuation are also handled inaccurately, causing occasional difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of accurate sentence structures, maintain consistent past tense verbs for historical data, and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
