Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graph illustrates how many individuals visited Caryl Island for the first time and how many came again between 2000 and 2008.
Overall, the count of people, visiting for the first time, increased almost linearly after the first 2 years. The number of individuals who returned also kept increasing until the last 2 years. The number of returning vistors took over the number of first time tourists in 2001.
8000 people went to the Island for the first time which was more than the count of returning visitors (around 3000) in the year 2000. The headcount of initial tourists decreased to 4000 in 2002 after which it went up in a linear manner reaching 12000 tourists in 2008.
In 2000, the tourist who came back to the island was around 3000 which then rose significantly even crossing the count of first time visitors. In 2006, this number was just above 15000, which is the highest amount of tourists in both categories in all the years. From 2006 to 2008, there was slight decrease in the number of toursits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response gives a clear overview of the main patterns: first-time visits fell initially and then rose, while returning visits climbed to a peak before declining. It also identifies the initial advantage of first-time visitors and the later dominance of returning visitors. Most figures are accurately reported, including the 2000 and 2002 values and the returning-visitor peak in 2006. However, the claim that first-time visitors reached 12,000 in 2008 overstates the chart’s approximate 11,800, and saying returning visitors took over in 2001 is unsupported because the graph only gives data at two-year intervals. The overview is relevant, but “almost linearly” over-generalises the later rise. More precise comparisons and careful wording around unshown years would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from the overall trends to specific figures. Linking expressions such as “after which,” “In 2006” and “From 2006 to 2008” help the reader follow the timeline. This is a coherent arrangement, though cohesion is not always smooth: the final paragraph repeats the 2000 figure already given in the preceding paragraph, and the shift from first-time visitors to returning visitors could be signposted more clearly. Some references, such as “this number,” require the reader to infer which series is meant. Grouping the two series’ changes at matching dates and reducing repetition would make the progression more controlled and flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary for describing the graph, including “decreased,” “rose significantly,” “crossing” and “slight decrease.” The writer also varies references to visitors with terms such as “individuals” and “tourists.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for data reporting: “headcount of initial tourists” and “the tourist who came back” are awkward, while “amount of tourists” uses an unsuitable noun for countable people. “Took over” is conversational, and “almost linearly” is not a natural or fully accurate description here. Spelling slips in “vistors” and “toursits” also limit control. Prefer standard, precise collocations such as “the number of returning visitors” and “reached a peak.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “8000 people went to the Island for the first time which was more than…” and a time clause beginning “From 2006 to 2008.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends clearly. Some grammatical control is less secure, however: the opening overview has an awkward participial construction in “the count of people, visiting for the first time,” and the sentence about 8,000 people needs clearer punctuation or restructuring to avoid a loose connection between clauses. The phrase “the tourist who came back … was around 3000” also has a singular/plural mismatch in meaning. More consistently controlled clause boundaries and plural constructions would improve accuracy while retaining the range already attempted.
