Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response makes a limited attempt to describe the graph, but it does not accurately report the main trends or give reliable comparisons. The statement that returning visitors were “around maximum level” and first-time visitors were at a “minimum level” is unclear, while the claim that the graph was decreasing conflicts with the data: both series rose overall, despite some fluctuations. The account also says the lowest point was in 2008, although first-time visitors were lowest in 2002 and returning visitors in 2000. No figures are included to support the description, and the final conclusion adds little. The response is also 31 words below the required minimum. Select the overall patterns and key turning points, then support them with accurate approximate values.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview, body statements and a conclusion. However, the ideas do not progress in a clear sequence, and several sentences are difficult to connect to the graph. For example, “Between 2000 and 2008, the line graph was decreasing point” is followed by a reference to increases in 2002 and 2004, without identifying which visitor group is being discussed. The final sentence, “In conclusion, the line comparison two lines between 2002 and 2008,” repeats the topic rather than summarising a finding. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the two series, and connect each comparison explicitly to its dates and visitor category.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response attempts some task-related vocabulary, including “line graph,” “visitors,” “increasing,” “decreasing” and “maximum level.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unclear, which makes the trends hard to understand. “Backing visitors” is not an appropriate term for returning visitors, and “people were moving back their home” does not describe the chart data. Phrases such as “approached minimise level” and “arrived lower point” are also unnatural. Aim for precise, standard expressions such as “the number of returning visitors,” “rose to a peak,” and “fell slightly.” Avoid adding ideas about visitors enjoying themselves or going home, as these are not shown in the graph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes both simple statements and attempts at longer sentences, but grammatical control is inconsistent and several structures obscure the intended meaning. For example, “the line graph compared visitors those were returning back” has an incomplete relative clause, while “The line was started at maximum level” uses an incorrect passive construction. The sentence beginning “Between 2000 and 2008” joins contrasting ideas awkwardly, and the final sentence lacks a clear verb structure. Tense and sentence formation also vary without a clear pattern. Practise writing direct comparisons in complete clauses, such as “Returning visitors rose from about 3,000 in 2000 to 15,000 in 2006, before falling.” This will help make the data description clearer and more accurate.
