Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graph tracks changes in the figures of the first time and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, it is apparent that first time visitor fell sharply before experiencing a gradual increase throughout the period, whereas the returning visitors recorded a steep increase firstly but then showed a slight drop by the latter year.

To commence with, at the outset, first time and returning tourists stood at 8000 and 3000, respectively. In 2002, first time visitors fell gradually to 4000, while returning visitors continued to climb and reached 10000. After two years, returning visitors recorded a slightly slow increase by reaching 12000.

Following this, in the same year, first time visitors started rising steadily and accounted for 6000. Furthermore, in 2006, returning visitors peaked at 15000, compared with approximately 9300 for the first timers. By the end of the period, the figures for first time visitors continued to rise and reached roughly 12000, while for returning visitors showed a decline by reaching precisely 13500.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main trends and makes the key comparison clear: first-time visitors fall and then rise, while returning visitors climb to a peak before declining. The opening figures and most later values are close to the chart, including the 2006 comparison and the end-of-period directions. The overview is relevant and the report covers both series across the period. A few details could be more precise: first-time visitors fell sharply, rather than “gradually,” from 8,000 to 4,000; returning visitors peaked at about 15,200, so “15,000” is a reasonable approximation, while “precisely 13,500” overstates the accuracy of the final estimate. More consistently accurate descriptions would strengthen an otherwise well-selected account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The report is organised into a clear introduction, overview and chronological detail, and the reader can follow the two visitor trends without difficulty. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “After two years,” “Following this” and “By the end of the period” help signal progression. The main limitation is that the sequence becomes slightly awkward where “Following this, in the same year” refers back to 2004 after the returning-visitor figure has already been described. The final sentence also shifts structure after “while,” making the comparison less smooth. Use clearer time references and keep parallel information in balanced clauses; this would make the progression more seamless while preserving the effective paragraphing.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

There is a sufficient range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fell sharply,” “gradual increase,” “peaked” and “decline.” These choices show some flexibility and are generally appropriate to a graph report. A few collocations and word choices are less natural or precise: “figures of the … visitors” is better expressed as visitor numbers, and “a slightly slow increase” is awkward. “First timers” is understandable but less formal than “first-time visitors.” Also, “precisely” is too definite for a value read approximately from a graph. Refining these expressions and avoiding repeated use of “visitors” where a clear reference is possible would improve precision and stylistic control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses with “whereas” and “while,” and most sentences communicate the intended trends clearly. There are, however, a few persistent grammatical slips. In the overview, “first time visitor fell” has a singular subject where the plural “visitors” is needed; “the returning visitors recorded a steep increase firstly” also has an awkwardly placed adverb. In the final sentence, “while for returning visitors showed a decline” lacks a clear grammatical subject; write, for example, “while the figure for returning visitors declined.” The sentence beginning “Following this” is also structurally unclear. More consistent agreement and complete parallel clauses would make the varied sentence forms more controlled.
