Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph illustrates the total number of tourists who landed in Caryl Island for the first time and return back between year 2000 to 2008.

Overall, returning tourists are significantly increased from year 2000 to 2008 whereas the number of first time visitors showed a fluctuating figures within the time period. It can be seen that the returning passengers are more dominant over the first came visitors.

To begin with, 3000 travelers were returned to caryl island in 2000 before the number rose up to 10000 in year 2002. Similarly, the figures showed a consistent growth until 2006 which is the peakest year of the vacationist to return home which was around 15000 before it dropped to 13000 in year 2008.

In contrast, the number of first time visitors are 8000 in the year 2000 which significantly decreased to just 4000 after 2 years. Lateron, the graph showed a stepped growth from 2002 to 2008, the figures raised to 12000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main contrast between the two visitor groups and report several key stages accurately: returning visitors rise from about 3,000 to a peak of roughly 15,000 in 2006, while first-time visitors fall to 4,000 in 2002 and then recover. The overview also notes the overall increase in returning visitors and fluctuation in first-time visitors. However, some details are imprecise: returning visitors reach about 15,200 in 2006 and finish at 13,400, rather than 13,000, and first-time visitors end at approximately 11,800, not 12,000. The claim that returning visitors are more numerous throughout is inaccurate, since first-time visitors lead in 2000. More precise comparisons would strengthen an otherwise clear summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs describing returning and first-time visitors. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “In contrast” help signal the shift between series, and the events are generally presented in chronological order. This organisation makes the main trends easy to follow. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, and the overview’s comparison that returning visitors are “more dominant” is not consistently supported by the data. The final paragraph also ends abruptly after reporting the first-time visitors’ rise, without a concluding comparison. Use cohesive links to show relationships between the series, and ensure each paragraph develops a complete comparison rather than simply listing changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the graph’s subject, including “visitors,” “figures,” “decreased,” “growth,” and “peak.” There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “travelers” and “passengers.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “return back,” “first came visitors,” “peakest year,” and “vacationist to return home” do not express the intended categories or trend clearly. “Landed” may also suggest arrival by air rather than simply visiting. These awkward collocations and word forms make the vocabulary less precise, even though the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Prefer standard graph language such as “returning visitors,” “reached a peak,” and “rose steadily.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast structure beginning “In contrast” and a clause introduced by “before.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “returning tourists are significantly increased” should be “the number of returning tourists increased significantly,” while “the number … showed a fluctuating figures” has a singular–plural mismatch. The opening phrase “between year 2000 to 2008” also has an incorrect preposition pattern, and “Lateron” is followed by a comma splice in “the graph showed …, the figures raised.” Check tense consistency when describing past data, use complete sentence boundaries, and review subject–verb agreement and article use.
