The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The following line graph delinates the fluctuations in the vistors who visited Caryl island from 2000 to 2008 when they visted the more in a year and also when they visited less in these years. It also ilustrates the difference between visitors in numbers.
over the subsequent years, the graph shows the upward trajectory in most years of both class of visitors but also demonstrate some fluctuation in the start and at the last year. Starting from 2000 to 2002, there is a significant decrease in the first time visitor from 8000 to 4000 but a prominent decrease in number of the returning visitors around 4000. After that, from 2002 to 2004 the number of first time visitors rose from 4000 to 6000 but in the same years the returning visitors also increased from 10000 to 12000 that is not so significant.
From 2004 to 2006, the trajectories of both visitors are prominently increasing. After 2006, there is a noticable decrease in returning visitors from 15000 to 13500 estimatedly but the first time visitors was just increasing around 9000 to 12000. From the graph it shows the interest in both likely to be the major but it varies in some years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify both visitor groups and describe several relevant movements, including the first-time visitors’ fall from 8,000 to 4,000 and the returning visitors’ rise to 12,000 by 2004. However, the overview is unclear: “upward trajectory in most years of both class” does not capture the contrasting final trends, and the opening focuses vaguely on when people visited more or less. There is also a key factual error: returning visitors increased from about 3,000 to 10,000 between 2000 and 2002, rather than decreasing by around 4,000. Some later figures are broadly accurate, but the response does not clearly identify the overall peak or compare the series. State the main patterns first, then support them with accurate figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from the opening years through 2004–2006 and then to 2008, and the paragraph break helps separate the introduction from the details. Time markers such as “After that” and “After 2006” also make the chronology visible. However, the first paragraph is an unclear, repetitive introduction rather than a concise overview, and the second paragraph combines several comparisons without a clear hierarchy. Some links are awkward or misleading, particularly “but a prominent decrease” after describing the returning visitors’ change. The final sentence does not provide a clear conclusion. Organise the report into an introduction, a concise overview of the main trends, and logically grouped details, using linking phrases only where their relationship is accurate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “significant decrease,” “rose,” “increased,” and “trajectories,” which is relevant to describing a graph. However, word choice and spelling errors are frequent enough to make parts of the report difficult to follow. Examples include “delinates,” “vistors,” “ilustrates,” and “noticable”; “prominent decrease” is also an unsuitable collocation, and “the more in a year” is unclear. Some expressions, such as “the trajectories of both visitors are prominently increasing,” sound unnatural and obscure the intended trend. Use a smaller set of precise, conventional terms consistently—for example, “visitor numbers,” “rose sharply,” “reached a peak,” and “declined slightly”—and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt longer sentences with time clauses and comparisons, such as “From 2004 to 2006…” and “After 2006…,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “both class of visitors” and “the first time visitors was just increasing.” Sentence construction is also faulty in “From the graph it shows…” and “the interest in both likely to be the major,” where the subject or verb structure is incomplete or unclear. Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, including the lowercase opening “over.” These problems sometimes make the relationships between ideas hard to understand. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and complete sentence structure during revision.
