Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify both visitor groups and describe several key movements, including the first-time visitors’ fall from 8,000 to 4,000 and the returning visitors’ rise to a peak. However, the overview is unclear and contains contradictory comparisons: you first say first-time visitors were higher overall, then state that returning visitors were higher in 2008. The chart shows returning visitors exceeded first-time visitors in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, while first-time visitors led only in 2000. Some figures are also inaccurate: returning visitors stood at about 13,400 in 2008, not 1,200, and their 2006 peak was about 15,200 rather than 14,000. Select the main trends accurately and give a clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, attempts an overview, and then discusses each visitor group. However, the progression is weakened by unclear or conflicting statements, especially the overview’s claim that first-time visitors were higher overall and the later comparison that returning visitors were higher in 2008. Linking words such as “whereas,” “Soon after,” and “Conversely” show an effort to connect ideas, but some are used awkwardly or do not clarify the relationship between the figures. The final comparison repeats information without resolving the earlier contradiction. Use a distinct overview followed by logically ordered details, and make each comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “sharp decline,” “considerable improvement,” “surged,” and “dramatic surge,” which is relevant to describing a graph. However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “cosiderable,” “Noticeablly,” “coversely,” and “retrning”; “improvement had come” and “dramatical surge numbers” are also unnatural collocations. Some phrases, such as “the ratio of returning visitors,” do not accurately express a comparison in visitor numbers. Aim for precise, conventional language such as “the number rose,” “reached a peak,” and “fell slightly,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use both simple and more complex sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “the numbers of first time visitors were higher then the number” has problems with agreement and comparison, while “the ratio of returning visitors were less as compare to 2008” contains faulty agreement and sentence structure. Tense and phrasing are also unreliable in “after two years it observed a sharp decline” and “in 2008 its number of visitors surged.” Punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, including spaces before commas and lower-case sentence openings. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and straightforward comparison structures before adding more complex clauses.
