Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graph illustrates the number of returning and first time visitors who visited Caryl Island in the given years of 2000 to 2008.

Overall, the chart indicates a rising number of visitors in the mentioned years. The number of returning visitors is higher than that of first time visitors. Some minor fluctuations are seen in both visitors.

To begin with, 8000 people were visiting the island for the first time in 2000 while a major fluctuation was seen when the number fell from 8000 to 4000 individuals in 2002. This number gradually increased from 2002 to 2008 with 6000 people in 2004 to 10000 in 2006 and finally to nearly 12000 in 2008 which is the peak of it.

Conversely, the individuals who again visited the island in the year 2000 were less than 4000. Furthermore, that number increased constantly to 10000 in 2002 which then to 12000 in 2004 and finally reaching a peak of more than 14000 in 2006 but that number fell to less than 14000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address the task and include an overview, then report the main movements for both visitor groups with relevant figures. The first-time series is accurately described as falling from 8,000 to 4,000 before rising to about 11,800, while returning visitors rise to a high point in 2006 and then decline. However, the overview says returning visitors were higher throughout, which is not true in 2000: first-time visitors numbered about 8,000 compared with 3,000 returning visitors. It also describes fluctuations in both series, although the returning series rises steadily until 2006. Make the overview more precise by identifying the contrasting starting point and the later peak-and-fall pattern.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for first-time and returning visitors. The progression within each paragraph is generally chronological, and signposting such as “To begin with” and “Conversely” helps distinguish the two series. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. In “which then to 12000 in 2004,” the relationship between the figures is incomplete, and “that number” in the final sentence requires the reader to infer which figure is meant. The overview also groups both series together despite their different patterns. Use complete linking clauses and clearer references, and organise the overview around the key contrast between the series.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “fell,” “increased,” “peak,” and “fluctuations,” so the main information is understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “Conversely” and “illustrates.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for graph reporting: “a major fluctuation was seen” is less direct than saying the figure fell sharply, and “individuals who again visited” is an awkward substitute for “returning visitors.” “Constantly” is also not the best fit for a steady rise in this context. Aim for precise trend verbs and natural collocations rather than replacing simple terms with less idiomatic alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “which,” and “but,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as the description of the first-time visitor figure falling and then rising. There are nevertheless some grammatical errors and awkward constructions. In “which then to 12000 in 2004,” the clause lacks a verb; write “which then rose to 12,000 in 2004.” The phrase “in the given years of 2000 to 2008” would be more accurately structured as “between 2000 and 2008.” Also check punctuation and spacing, as in the extra space before “when.” More consistent control of clauses and sentence boundaries would strengthen accuracy.
