Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the number of first-time visitors and returning visitors to caryl Island between 2000 to 2008.

Overall, while first-time visitors initially outnumbered returning visitors, the opposite became true for the remainder of the period.Despite fluctuation, both categories experianced an overall increase in number by the end of the timeframe.

Returning visitors in 2000, the number of returning visitor stood at a low of 3000.However, this figure saw a rapid surge over the next six years. It surpassed the number of first-time visitors around 2001 and peaked at roughly 15000 in 2006.Following this peak, the number of repeat tourist experienced a moderate drop, endingat appoximately 13000 in 2008.

First-time visitors conversely,first-time visitors started higher at 8000 in 2000 before declining sharply to a low of about 4000 in 2002.After 2002,this trend reversed completely ,the number og new visitors steadily increased over the next 6 year, reaching nearly 12000 by 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast and overall movement: first-time visitors begin higher, returning visitors overtake them, and both series finish above their starting levels. The figures are generally well selected, including the first-time low of about 4,000 and the returning-visitor peak around 15,000 in 2006. This covers the task well, though the overview could be more precise: first-time visitors do not simply rise steadily after 2002, and the two series have distinct turning points worth summarising. The claim that the crossover occurred “around 2001” is not directly shown by the graph’s two-year intervals. The response is also 13 words below the 150-word minimum; the nine words copied from the prompt do not count toward that requirement. Add a concise comparison or further accurate detail to complete the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for returning and first-time visitors. This makes the two trends easy to follow, and transitions such as “However,” “Following this peak,” and “After 2002” help signal changes. However, some linking and referencing are awkward or repetitive. For example, “First-time visitors conversely, first-time visitors…” repeats the subject and leaves “conversely” poorly integrated; the paragraph would flow better if it began, “By contrast, first-time visitors…”. The overview’s “while” contrast also needs clearer punctuation. Paragraphing and progression are sound overall, but more controlled linking and cleaner sentence openings would make cohesion less noticeable and more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “surge,” “peaked,” “declining sharply,” and “reaching nearly,” which helps describe changes rather than merely list figures. Some choices are less precise or natural for this graph, however: “low” is used for the starting value of returning visitors, although it is not their lowest point, and “repeat tourist” shifts the label from visitors to tourists. There are also spelling errors such as “experianced,” “appoximately,” and “og,” which reduce accuracy. “Fluctuation” is not quite apt for the first-time series, which falls and then rises. Aim for consistent chart terminology and check spelling and collocations; this would make the vocabulary more precise and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrast clause “while first-time visitors initially outnumbered returning visitors” and the time clause “before declining sharply to a low of about 4,000.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In the introduction, “between 2000 to 2008” should be “between 2000 and 2008” or “from 2000 to 2008.” The opening of the returning-visitors paragraph, “Returning visitors in 2000, the number…,” is a fragment-like construction; use “In 2000, the number of returning visitors stood…”. Several sentences also run together because spaces and full stops are missing, and the final paragraph repeats its subject. More careful sentence boundaries and varied, accurately controlled structures would improve the range and clarity.
