Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart below illustrates the number of first time visitors along with the visitors who came back to the Caryl Island between the year 2000 and 2008.

Overall, we can see that the count of returning visitors grew sharply until 2006 and then fell down slightly after that. In case of the First time visitors, initially its number decreased until 2002 and then took a drastic jump till 2008. In Caryl Island, returning visitors contributed the most of the portion towards the total visitors count.

In resepect to the new visitors, their portion was 8000 in the year 2000 and then it started decreasing and reached its lowest point with 4000 visitors in 2002. After that the numbers started growing dramatically and continuously and saw its highest point in 2008 with 12000 visitors.

Talking about the returning visitors, their number started with 3000 visitors in 2000. As time passed the returning visitors kept growing and in 2002 when the first time visitor was at its lowest with 4000 visitors in that same time there were 10000 returning visitors and it kept jumping till 2006 and reached 15000 which was its peak point. After that those numbers fell slightly and came down to around 13500 in the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You identify the main patterns accurately: returning visitors rise to a peak in 2006 before declining, while first-time visitors fall to a low in 2002 and then increase. The overview also notes that returning visitors form the larger share overall, which is supported by the figures. Your selected data points are generally close to the chart, including 8,000 and 4,000 for first-time visitors and approximately 15,000 and 13,500 for returning visitors. The response addresses the task and supports its overview with relevant details. To make the account more precise, report the 2004 and 2006 first-time figures and clarify that returning visitors exceed first-time visitors from 2002 onward; “the most of the portion” is also an unclear way to express this comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for first-time and returning visitors. This makes the two series easy to follow, and phrases such as “After that” and “After that those numbers” help signal changes over time. However, some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “After that” and “Talking about,” and the long final sentence combines several comparisons and stages. The reference to the first-time visitor low point within the returning-visitors paragraph is relevant but interrupts the focus slightly. For stronger progression, group the series by comparable periods or use more varied, precise transitions, while keeping each sentence focused on one main comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “decreased,” “grew sharply,” “lowest point,” “peak point,” and “fell slightly,” so the main movements are understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for an academic chart summary: “came back” is informal, “kept jumping” is not a suitable description of a steady rise, and “contributed the most of the portion towards the total visitors count” is awkward. There are also spelling errors in “resepect” and inconsistent capitalisation of “First time visitors.” Aim for concise, conventional collocations such as “returning visitors,” “rose steadily,” and “accounted for the largest share.” This would improve precision and formality without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including time clauses such as “when the first time visitor was at its lowest” and a contrast between the two trends in the overview. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “initially its number decreased” has an unclear pronoun reference, and “In Caryl Island, returning visitors contributed…” uses an awkward sentence structure. The phrase “in 2002 when … in that same time there were…” also needs clearer clause boundaries and punctuation. Check articles and number agreement as well: “the first time visitor” refers to a series of visitors, while “those numbers fell” is less precise than referring directly to the visitor count. More consistently controlled clauses would strengthen accuracy.
