Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the topic and attempts an overview, but it does not adequately summarise the graph. The overview says returning visitors were higher overall and that both categories increased, yet the first claim is not true across the period: first-time visitors were higher in 2000, and returning visitors fell from about 15,200 to 13,400 between 2006 and 2008. The account also gives contradictory figures for 2000, first saying returning visitors numbered 3,000 and then claiming first-time visitors were more, before reporting 8,000. It mentions the rise to 10,000 but does not clearly identify the series or cover the later years. The response is 43 words below the required minimum, which contributes to its very limited coverage. Include an accurate overview and key figures for both lines across the full period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic structure, with an opening sentence, a separate overview and a detail paragraph, so the reader can recognise the intended stages of the report. However, the progression is limited: the final paragraph stops after one later figure and does not guide the reader through the remaining years or compare the two series consistently. The transition “However” signals contrast, but the relationship between the preceding statements is unclear, especially because the 2000 comparison is contradictory. Some linking and punctuation are also awkward, as in “Overall, the number…” followed immediately by “In recent days, the number…”. To improve, organise the details chronologically or by series, and use clear comparisons to connect each stage.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “newly arrived,” “returning tourists,” “surged,” and “visitors,” and the general subject remains understandable. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a graph: “amount of newly arrived … tourists” is better expressed as a number of first-time visitors, while “tourists of Caryl Island” is an awkward way to describe people visiting the island. “In recent days” does not fit a historical period ending in 2008, and “visited again” is less concise than “returning visitors.” Repetition of “visitors” and “number” also limits flexibility. Use accurate graph vocabulary and vary expressions carefully without changing the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “while” and “However,” and most of the intended meaning can be followed. However, errors in agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries are noticeable. For example, “the number of tourist” needs a plural noun, and “the number of visitors are increased” has incorrect agreement and verb form. The sentence beginning “In the year, first time visitor numbers…” is incomplete or awkwardly constructed, while “in that same year, first time tourists” needs clearer punctuation and article use. There is also inconsistent spacing after commas and full stops. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
