Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify both visitor groups and give some relevant figures, including 8,000 first-time visitors and about 3,000 returning visitors in 2000, and the low point of 4,000 first-time visitors in 2002. However, the overview is unclear and does not accurately summarise the main pattern: returning visitors rose to a peak of about 15,200 in 2006 before falling, while first-time visitors generally increased after 2002. The claim that returning visitors were “quite less” in the first year is also confusing, since they were fewer than first-time visitors. Some details are inaccurate or incomplete: both series did not surge in 2004 and 2005, and the graph has no 2005 data point. Select the key turning points and compare the two series more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to selected years, so the reader can identify the general subject. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview combines several trends in a difficult-to-follow sentence, and the final paragraph jumps between years without a clear comparison. Linking words such as “however” and “Whereas” are attempted, but some are used inaccurately or leave the relationship between ideas unclear. Paragraphing is present, yet the information would be easier to follow if the overview were separated clearly from a chronological account of the main figures. Use straightforward links such as “By contrast” and “After 2002” only where the comparison or sequence is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “visitors,” “fluctuated,” “upward trend,” and “decline,” and you attempt to describe change rather than simply list figures. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to understand. For example, “the number … is surge” and “face downward” do not express the trends naturally, while “quite less” is an unsuitable comparison. There are also spelling and form errors, such as “Overal” and “neverthless.” Aim for precise chart language and accurate forms, for example, “rose sharply,” “fell,” “reached a peak,” and “was lower than.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentences and contrast, but the range of structures is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in phrases such as “the number of visitors are given” and “the number … is surge.” Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “the number of a first time visitors,” while punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent, particularly in “At the year 2004,2005 both respectively surge both.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas hard to follow. Build accuracy first with clear simple sentences, then combine them using controlled clauses—for example, “Returning visitors rose sharply to 10,000 in 2002, while first-time visitors fell to 4,000.”
