Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the two visitor groups and the period, and you attempt an overview, but the main trends are substantially misreported, so the response only minimally fulfils the task. First-time visitors did not decline overall: they fell from about 8,000 in 2000 to 4,000 in 2002, then rose to nearly 12,000 by 2008. Returning visitors rose from about 3,000 to a peak of roughly 15,000 in 2006, before easing to around 13,000. Your overview instead says returning visitors rose throughout and first-time visitors declined. Several details are also inaccurate, including the claim that returning visitors peaked at 1,000 in 2003. Focus on an accurate overview and select a few key figures to support it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has separate introductory, overview and detail paragraphs, and phrases such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to organise the two series. However, progression within the paragraphs is difficult to follow: the first detail paragraph jumps between 2002, 2008 and 2004 without clearly explaining the sequence, while the second gives conflicting dates for the peak and decline. Some linking phrases are also used mechanically or do not clarify the relationship between ideas. Organise each detail paragraph chronologically, state the starting point, main change and ending point, and use simple links such as “then,” “by contrast” and “before” only where they accurately connect information.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “fell” and “stood at,” and you attempt to vary your descriptions. However, the range is basic and several inaccurate or misspelled choices make the account hard to understand. Examples include “graps,” “resturing,” “contend” and “risely”; “grow wisely” does not clearly describe a rise, and “normal” is not a precise way to characterise a trend. Repetition of “trend” and “number” also limits precision. Build a reliable set of chart verbs and nouns, and check spelling and collocations before using less familiar expressions. For example, describe figures as rising, falling, peaking or fluctuating, and refer to visitor numbers rather than “contend.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt a few longer structures, including the contrast beginning “While the First time visitors…” and the sentence starting “However,” but control is weak and errors frequently obscure the intended meaning. For example, “the number of Returning visitors showed in 2000 to 2008 upward trend” lacks a clear verb pattern and article, while “it fell a while in 2002” and “it start to rise peak” have faulty verb forms and sentence construction. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly in “And” after a full stop. Practise accurate simple sentences first, such as “Returning visitor numbers rose from about 3,000 in 2000 to 10,000 in 2002,” then combine them with correctly formed clauses using “while” or “before.”
