Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph provides data for Caryl Island and showcases the number of first time visitors and returning visitors between the years 2000 and 2008.

Overall, the Caryl Island seemed to have been popular among the visitors in 2000. The first time visitors remained relatively stable over the years except for the deep fall in 2001. The returning visitors were rapidly increasing over the years, however they dropped in 2006 following a decline till 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify both visitor groups and report several key figures, including the rise in returning visitors from 3,000 to 10,000 by 2002 and the fall in first-time visitors to 4,000. However, the overview contains important inaccuracies: first-time visitors did not remain stable, and returning visitors did not drop in 2006; they peaked at about 15,200 then and declined by 2008. The claim that first-time visitors reached 10,000 in 2008 also understates the figure, which was about 11,800. The response therefore selects relevant information but does not consistently represent the main trends or make accurate comparisons. Focus the overview on the contrasting trajectories and check each figure against the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two visitor groups, so there is some organisation. However, progression is weakened by unclear or contradictory links. For example, “they dropped in 2006 following a decline till 2008” does not clearly explain the returning visitors’ trend, and “Before experiencing a moderate decline in the same year” leaves the subject and timing confusing. The final sentence, “Both the returning and first time visitors fluctuated in the beginning,” repeats earlier information without adding a clear comparison. Use each body paragraph to describe one series in chronological order, and make pronouns and linking phrases refer unambiguously to the relevant group and year.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “rose significantly,” “dramatic decline,” “gradual increase” and “moderate decline,” which helps communicate changes. However, some choices are imprecise or awkward for describing graph data: “popular among the visitors” is vague, “things took a turn” is informal, and “the highest peak of visitors” is not a natural collocation. Repetition of “visitors” and “number of people” also limits flexibility. Choose precise terms such as “visitor numbers,” “increased,” “fell” and “reached a peak,” and reserve evaluative language like “dramatic” for changes that the data clearly supports. This would make the account more accurate and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while” and “however,” but complex structures are often faulty and errors sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “After this however, things took a turn for returning visitor. Which rose significantly” incorrectly separates a relative clause into a fragment. “While the first time visitors were considerably a high number of people … but there was” combines incompatible clause structures, while “The highest peak of visitors were” has an agreement error. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “2 years.This.” Practise joining clauses correctly, checking subject–verb agreement, and using commas and full stops to mark complete sentences.
