Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify both visitor groups and include several relevant figures, such as first-time visitors falling from 8,000 to 4,000 and returning visitors rising to about 15,000 in 2006. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: returning visitors did not increase steadily throughout, because they fell from around 15,200 in 2006 to 13,400 in 2008. The first-time visitor account is cut off after “it increased to,” so the later rise and 2008 figure are not reported. This leaves the summary incomplete and the main trends only partly conveyed. The response also falls six words short of the 150-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt do not count toward it. Include a complete comparison and a concise, accurate overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the two visitor groups. Connectors such as “Overall,” “To commence with” and “On the other hand” help signal these sections. However, progression is difficult to follow because some sentences are incomplete or unclear, especially the final sentence, which ends at “but it increased to.” The overview also gives an unclear sequence, and the returning-visitors paragraph repeats the 2002 date while describing the later rise. Some linking phrases are used mechanically rather than to clarify relationships. Complete each trend description, group the figures in chronological order, and use transitions that accurately show contrast or change.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “first time visitors,” “returning visitors,” “increased” and “down,” so the reader can recognise the topic and basic movements. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling and collocation problems make the account harder to understand: “the various of” is not a natural way to introduce the data, and “started around” is imprecise for a figure. Errors such as “differnt,” “yers,” “constanley” and “orther” also reduce clarity. Aim for accurate, standard trend language and check spelling carefully. Useful alternatives include “fluctuated,” “rose,” “declined” and “reached,” used with the correct figures and time periods.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a contrast with “but” and a time clause beginning “in the year 2000.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “The graph represent” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “the returning visitors was increased” uses an incorrect verb form and agreement. The overview’s “was stared” construction is also faulty, and several sentences lack clear grammatical completion, most notably the final sentence. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and spaces around dates. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of chart trends and check that every sentence has a clear subject and complete verb phrase.
