Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph illustrates the number of visitors to Caryl Island either first time or returing, during eight years ([redacted phone]).

Overall it is evident that, there was a significant increase in returning visitors while first time visitors plunged in early phase and surged at the end, little below returing visitors.

Looking more closely at the figures, three thousand returning visitors travelled to Caryl Island in the year 2000, followed by a sharp rise reaching ten thousand in year 2002, while it reached to 15000 in year 2006 and then there was a gradual decline till 2008 and returning visitors were almost 13000.

In other terms, first time visitors followed a totally different pattern, starting from 8000 visitors in the year 2000 and fell to just 4000 visitors in 2002, when returning visitors were travelling more often to Caryl Island. In the following years, first time visitors numbers increased significantly reaching almost 12000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main patterns: returning visitors rose substantially before declining, while first-time visitors fell early and then recovered. The key starting and ending figures are also reported accurately, and you make a relevant comparison by noting that first-time visitors finished just below returning visitors. This supports a well-focused summary of the graph. Some detail is less precise: returning visitors peaked at about 15,200 in 2006, rather than 15,000, and the first-time series also rose through 2004 and 2006, but those intermediate figures are omitted. The overview’s phrase “significant increase” also simplifies the returning series, which ends below its peak. More precise reporting of the peak and the intermediate stages would make the account more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the two visitor groups. This makes the main trends easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Looking more closely,” and “In the following years” help guide the reader. The comparison between the series is also relevant. However, some connections are mechanical or imprecise. “In other terms” does not naturally introduce the contrasting pattern, and “when returning visitors were travelling more often” is an awkward way to connect the 2002 figures. The overview also says first-time visitors surged “at the end,” while the detail paragraph gives no intermediate stages to show that progression. Use more precise transitions and connect the overview more directly to the evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “sharp rise,” “gradual decline,” “plunged,” and “surged.” These choices help distinguish the movements in the two series, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision. “Returing” is misspelled, “first time” would be clearer as “first-time,” and “reaching to 15000” is not a natural collocation. “In other terms” is also an unsuitable phrase for introducing a contrast. Aim for consistent, accurate trend language and natural combinations such as “rose to,” “fell to,” and “by contrast.” This would make the description more fluent and precise without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses linked with “while,” “followed by,” and “when.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “there was a significant increase … while first time visitors plunged,” the plural subject needs a clearer parallel construction; “first-time visitor numbers fell” would work. “Starting from 8000 visitors … and fell” shifts from a participle to a finite verb, while “it reached to 15000” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also article and punctuation problems, as in “it is evident that, there was,” and missing articles in phrases such as “in year 2002.” Practise keeping verb forms parallel and checking articles and sentence punctuation.
