Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates that how many numbers of visitors are first time visitors and returning visitors who visit Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

If we saw in the line graph, There are 8000 fisrt-time visitors who visit Caryl Island in 2000 and we saw a proper decline and number of visitors are just 4000 in 2002. From 2002 to 2008 a constant increase in the first time visitor, In 2004 they was 6000 whereas in 2006 first time visitor was 9000 and in 2008 they was aproximately 12000.

Returning visitor was more than first time visitor in Caryl Island. In 2000 they was 3000 whereas in 2002 they was 10000.In 2006 line graph show highest returning visitors which are nearly about 15000 and in 2008 returning visitors was 13500 which was less than 2006 retuning visitor ratio.

Somehow we saw the number of returning visitors constantly increase from 2000 to 2006 except 2008 and first time visitor constantly increase from 2002 to 2008 but we saw a drop in the first time visitors during 2000 to 2002.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You report the main movements in both visitor groups and include several relevant figures: first-time visitors fall from 8,000 to 4,000 before rising, while returning visitors climb to a peak around 2006 and then decline. However, the response lacks a clear, concise overview near the beginning, so the key contrast is not immediately established. The statement that returning visitors were “more than first time visitor” is too broad: first-time visitors outnumbered returning visitors in 2000. Some figures are also imprecise, such as describing the 2006 first-time total as 9,000 rather than about 9,300, though this is a minor difference. To strengthen the report, state the overall patterns and the changing relationship between the groups clearly, then support them with accurate comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the graph, discusses first-time visitors, then returning visitors, and ends with a summary. This gives the reader some organisation, and time markers such as “In 2000” and “From 2002 to 2008” help show sequence. However, progression is not consistently clear. The final paragraph repeats trends already described, while “Somehow we saw” does not create a clear summary relationship. Linking is also sometimes mechanical, with repeated “whereas” and “we saw,” and the reference in “they” is not always precise. Organise the report around an overview followed by one paragraph for each series, and use clear comparisons to connect the data rather than repeating it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant basic terms such as “decline,” “increase,” “highest,” and “visitors,” so the main trends can generally be understood. However, the vocabulary is limited and repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “we saw,” “visitor,” and “increase.” Some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, including “how many numbers of visitors,” “a proper decline,” and “returning visitor ratio.” Spelling errors such as “fisrt-time” and “retuning” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional graph language: for example, “the number of first-time visitors fell,” “reached a peak,” and “the figure then decreased.” Varying accurate trend verbs and using the correct forms of visitor terminology would make the report clearer and more appropriate for an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates the broad trends, but grammatical control is inconsistent and sentence structures are mostly simple, with attempts at longer sentences often becoming faulty. The opening, “illustrates that how many numbers,” has an incorrect clause structure. There are repeated agreement and verb-form errors, as in “they was” and “they was 6000,” and the sentence beginning “From 2002 to 2008 a constant increase” is incomplete. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent, as in “If we saw in the line graph, There are…”. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check subject–verb agreement and past-tense consistency. A few accurate complex sentences using “while” or “although” would also help express comparisons more effectively.
