The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph compare between the proportion of first time visitors and returning visitors to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, it can be seen that returning visitors increased at the beginning of the period with a litle decrease in the end, while visitors for the first time declined in the beginning of the period and bounce back for the reminning time frame.

First of all, the number first time visitors to Caryl island stood at 8000 in 2000. After two years the rate of first time visitors decreased to 4000 in 2002.However, the amount of this increased sharply over the next six years to end the period at 12000 aproximately.

In contrast, the rate of returning visitors from Caryl Island begin the period in 2000 with almost 3000 return. But this number increased dramatically over the next six years to hit 15000 returning visitors in 2006. Next, for the reminning two years of the period the proportion of the ruturing visitors declined to end the period below 14000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main movements and provide a clear overview: returning visitors rose strongly before falling slightly, while first-time visitors fell initially and then recovered. The figures are generally grounded in the graph, including the starting values and the returning-visitor peak around 15,000 in 2006. However, the first-time series is described as ending at about 12,000 without making clear that it rose through both 2004 and 2006; the graph shows approximately 6,000 and 9,300 at those points. The overview also says returning visitors increased “at the beginning,” which understates their continued rise through 2006. More precise intermediate comparisons and a sharper overview would make the report more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two visitor groups. This makes the main comparison easy to follow, and transitions such as “However” and “In contrast” help signal changes. The progression is generally logical, but the body paragraphs compress several years into broad statements, so the sequence of changes is not always fully clear. For example, the first-time visitors’ rise is grouped into one six-year period, while the returning visitors’ rise is also summarised without reporting the 2004 value. Some linking phrases, including “First of all” and “Next,” feel mechanical. Organising each series around its key stages and using more precise time references would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “declined,” “increased dramatically,” and “end the period,” which communicates the broad trends. However, the range and control are limited by repeated use of general terms such as “number,” “rate,” and “amount,” and several choices are inaccurate for visitor counts. “Proportion” suggests a share rather than a number, while “15000 returning visitors” would be more naturally expressed as a figure or total. Spelling errors such as “litle,” “reminning,” “aproximately,” and “ruturing” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for accurate trend language and check spelling carefully; a small set of well-chosen terms is more effective than varied but unsuitable wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and a time clause in “After two years…”. However, grammatical control is uneven, and errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as longer constructions. The opening “The line graph compare between…” has incorrect subject–verb agreement and an incomplete comparison structure; “the number first time visitors” is missing a necessary grammatical link, and “this increased” has an unclear subject. There are also tense and form problems in “begin the period” and “visitors… declined… and bounce back.” Punctuation is inconsistent, notably the missing space after “2002.” Review agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
