Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustrations depicts the number of first time and returning visitors to caryl island from year 2000 to 2008. I will discuss this in detail in the body paragraph.
Overall, within the first two years the number of first time visitors reduced considerably, and within the last two year the number of returning visitors was reduced.
To begin with, In year 2000, the number of first time visitors were approximately 8000. In year 2002 it reduced to 4000 visitors. Then from year 2002 to year 2008 it increased considerably at the rate of 1000 visitors per year.
Moreover, the returning visitor's graph shows a straight line which indicates that the number of visitors within first two years increased from 3000 to 10,000. Then it slowed down from year 2002 to 2006 and only remaining 1000 visitors every year. In year 2006 to 2008 it reduced to 14,000 from that of 15,000.
Hence, the line fluctuated at start, but remained simultaneous in the years laying between the starting and ending years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify both visitor groups and report several key movements, including the fall in first-time visitors from about 8,000 to 4,000 and the rise in returning visitors from 3,000 to around 15,000. The overview also notes that returning visitors declined towards the end. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: first-time visitors rose by roughly 2,000, then 3,300, then 2,500 across the later intervals, rather than increasing at a steady rate of 1,000 per year. Returning visitors increased by about 2,000 between 2002 and 2004, then 3,200 by 2006. The final statement about the lines fluctuating and remaining “simultaneous” does not clearly describe the data. Select and report the main trends more precisely, especially in the overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the two visitor groups. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “Then,” and “Moreover” help guide the reader through the years. However, some linking is mechanical, and the final sentence does not provide a clear or useful conclusion. The overview mentions only selected changes rather than summarising the contrasting overall patterns, while the body sometimes combines several stages in a way that obscures the comparisons. For example, “Then it slowed down … and only remaining 1000 visitors every year” is difficult to follow. Use clearer links between time periods and organise the details around the main trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “first time visitors,” “returning visitors,” “reduced,” and “increased considerably,” so the reader can generally understand the subject and direction of change. There is some variety in how you describe movement, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a graph report. “The illustrations” is not an appropriate description of a single line graph, and “remained simultaneous” does not convey a clear trend. “At the rate of 1000 visitors per year” also suggests a steady annual rate that the figures do not support. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, such as “rose to,” “fell by,” and “reached a peak.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “which indicates” and “but,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The illustrations depicts” should use a plural verb, while “the number … were approximately 8000” requires a singular verb. “Within the last two year” also has a number-agreement error, and “Then it slowed down … and only remaining 1000 visitors every year” is not a complete, well-formed construction. Capitalisation after sentence breaks is inconsistent as well. Check agreement around “the number of” and ensure each clause has a complete verb.
