Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph gives the figure of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.

Overall, there are two types of visitors. Visitors are first time visitors and returning visitors. First time visitor has fall after the start of the first year and rose from second year in the graph. Returning visitors has increased upto fourth year and decreased from fourth to the final year.

Firstly, first time visitors start decreasing from year 2000 that is 8000 to 4000 in 2002. It create the economic disaster in the Island. Than from 2002, it starts growing from 4000 to having slight changes in the graph between 2002 and 2008, which was reached to 12000.

Finally, returning visitors has started from the lowest point in 2000 which was between 2000 and 4000. It rose straight to 10000 in 2002 and little increase to 12000 and reached to 15000 in 2006. Again decreased to 13500 in 2008, which is also the higher than first time visitors in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visitor groups and identify the main overall patterns: first-time visitors fall initially and then rise, while returning visitors increase to a peak before declining. The comparisons are generally supported by the graph, including the fact that returning visitors outnumber first-time visitors in 2008. Most figures are close to the chart, although the first-time total in 2008 is given as 12,000 rather than approximately 11,800. The statement that the fall “create[s] the economic disaster” is unsupported and does not belong in an objective summary. Your overview also repeats that there are two types of visitors instead of highlighting the key contrast in their trends. Develop the overview around those trends and avoid speculation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two visitor groups. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow, and “Firstly” and “Finally” signal the shift between groups. However, progression is weakened by repetition, especially “there are two types of visitors” followed by naming those same types. Some linking is mechanical, and the overview’s “from second year” and “fourth year” references are not immediately clear because the graph is organised by calendar years. The first-time visitor paragraph also moves from figures to an unsupported economic claim and then back to the trend. Use clearer year references and connect each sentence directly to the relevant comparison or change.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary such as “visitors,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “reached,” so the main trends can be understood. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a graph. “It create the economic disaster” is both unsupported and an unsuitable expression for this task; “the number fell” would be more appropriate. “Having slight changes” does not accurately describe the substantial rise from 4,000 to around 11,800, while “rose straight” is an awkward collocation. There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “Than” for “Then” and “upto” for “up to.” Choose precise trend language and vary it with terms such as “declined,” “climbed,” and “peaked.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the reader can generally follow the sequence of changes. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “First time visitor has fall” should be “The number of first-time visitors fell,” and “Returning visitors has increased” should be “Returning visitors increased.” In “It create the economic disaster,” the subject–verb form is incorrect; the sentence should also be removed because the claim is not supported by the graph. Some sentences combine several changes without clear grammatical control, as in “it starts growing from 4000 to having slight changes.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons in complete, clearly structured sentences.
