Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph displays the amount of first time tourists and returning tourists went to Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008.
Overall, from 2002 to 2006, the number of first time and returning visitor showed a stable growth. However, in 2002, first time visitor amount dropped drastically to 4000, while it was 8000 in 2000.
The number of returning visitors grew significantly since 2000. It was nearly 2500 in that year, and substantially increased to approximately 10000 in 2002. Then the growth rate decreased a bit, but it was stiil increasing till 2006 and reached nearly 15000 before it fell down to approximately 14000 in 2008.
In contrast, the amount of first time visitors decreased rapidly from 2000. It was 8000 in 2000, but saw a rapid fall in 2002 when it was only 4000. However, the number rose again from 2002 to 2008, and the number become nearly 12000 from 4000 within these years and peaked at the highest level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast: returning visitors rose to a high point in 2006 before declining, while first-time visitors fell initially and then recovered. Several figures are also broadly accurate, including 4,000 first-time visitors in 2002 and about 10,000 returning visitors that year. However, the overview is not fully precise: describing both series as showing “stable growth” from 2002 to 2006 overlooks the different sizes and pace of their increases. The final claim that first-time visitors “peaked at the highest level” is unclear and could suggest they exceeded returning visitors, although they did not. Include a concise overview of the overall ranking and the 2006 peak, and report the 2008 values more accurately to make the key features clearer and more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of returning and first-time visitors. This makes the two series easy to distinguish. However, progression is weakened by repetition: the first-time visitor fall from 8,000 to 4,000 is described in both the overview and the final paragraph. The overview also introduces a broad claim about stable growth that is then repeated in less precise terms. Linking phrases such as “However” and “In contrast” are relevant, but the contrast between the series could be organised more efficiently. Avoid repeating the same figures, and use the overview to summarise the main trends before giving each series’ key stages in a clear sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “dropped drastically,” “grew significantly,” “increased,” and “fell,” so the main movements are understandable. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a graph: “amount of visitors” is less suitable than “number of visitors,” and “fell down” is not the natural collocation here. “Growth rate decreased a bit” also suggests a measured rate rather than simply a slower rise. There is a spelling error in “stiil,” and “tourists” is used in the introduction where the graph labels them as visitors. Aim for precise, consistent terms and natural collocations; this will make the description more fluent without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple statements and more complex forms, such as “while it was 8000 in 2000” and “when it was only 4000.” Most sentences communicate the intended trend, but some grammatical errors remain. In “the number of first time and returning visitor showed,” the subject and plural form are not controlled; write “the numbers of first-time and returning visitors showed.” The phrase “the number become nearly 12000” needs a past-tense verb, and “from 4000 within these years” is an incomplete or unclear construction. There are also tense and article issues in “grew significantly since 2000.” Use consistent past tense for the historical data and check agreement and sentence completeness, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
