Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph compares the number of visitors who visited Cary Island for the first time and those who returned back over 8 years.

Overall, returnning tourists recorded the highest figure significantly overtook first time visitors despite their rise in the first year.

In 2000, the number of first time visitors stood at 8000, whereas returning visitors started at up 2000. On the next years, returning visitors rose significantly to 10000 and overtook first time visitors between 2000 and 2002. Meanwhile, the number of people who visited the place for the first time increased to 4000 in 2002 before rising slightly to nearly 6000 in 2003. In comparison returning people contiouned to rise to about 12000 in 2004 after that the number reached its peak at up 14000 in 2005. Similarly, the number of first time visitors showed a recovery and increased gradually to 8000 in 2005 and then to under 12000 at the end of the year. However, returning tourists experienced a decline from 14000 to under 14000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the two visitor groups and give a broad comparison, noting that returning visitors overtook first-time visitors and that their numbers later declined. However, the overview is unclear: “despite their rise in the first year” does not accurately summarise the overall pattern, since returning visitors rose sharply for most of the period before falling. Several details are misreported or confusing. First-time visitors fell from 8,000 to 4,000 in 2002, rather than increasing to 4,000, and the graph records 2004 and 2006, not 2003 and 2005. The peak for returning visitors is about 15,200 in 2006, not 14,000 in 2005. Select the main trends accurately and compare the series at the same dates.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence from an introduction to an overview and then a chronological account, so the reader can recognise the intended comparison. However, progression is weakened by unclear or inaccurate links between dates and figures, particularly “On the next years” and the shifts to 2003 and 2005, which are not graph years. Linking expressions such as “Meanwhile,” “In comparison,” “Similarly,” and “However” show an effort to connect ideas, but some do not establish a clear contrast or relationship. The long body paragraph also combines several trends without clear grouping. Organise the details into a paragraph for each visitor series, or group the figures by period, and use transitions only when the relationship is precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “first time visitors,” “returning visitors,” “overtook,” “rose,” and “decline,” which helps communicate the graph’s subject. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive: “returnning,” “contiouned,” “returned back,” and “the number of people who visited the place” reduce precision. Phrases such as “started at up 2000” and “reached its peak at up 14000” are not natural collocations. Use concise, accurate language for trends and figures, such as “stood at,” “climbed to,” “peaked at,” and “fell to.” Check spelling and avoid repeating “number of visitors” when a clear reference is possible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and clauses introduced by “before” and “after.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “returning visitors started at up 2000” has an incorrect construction, while “On the next years” uses an unsuitable preposition and article pattern. The sentence beginning “Overall” also lacks a clear grammatical relationship between “recorded” and “overtook.” Tense and sentence structure become confusing in “then to under 12000 at the end of the year.” Build shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses, and check that each sentence has a clear subject, verb, and time reference.
