Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who travelled to Caryl Island between 2000 to 2008.
Overall, 2006 was the peak year for travellers with the highest number of people visiting the island, while 2000 was the year with the least number of travellers who visited the land. On the other hand, in 2008 the numbers of returning individuals peaked, while in 2002 the least number of visitors able to comeback from caryl island.
To start with, in 2000 the number of annual visitors was 2200 which rose significantly to 10,000 people in 2002. In 2004 the number increased further to a new high 12000 people. In 2006 the number reached it all time highest of above 14,000 people from there ownwards there was of decline in people visiting the island when in 2008 the number fell below 14000 people.
However, the number returning visitors was 8000 people in 2000 which fell to its half in 2002 with 4000 people. In 2004 the figure rose slightly to 6000 which remain increasingly steadily reaching to 10000 people in 2006. 2008 recorded the highest number returning individuals when the figure rose to 12000 people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response attempts to describe both visitor groups and includes an overview, but the main features are substantially misreported, so the task is only minimally addressed. The overview says 2006 was the peak year overall and 2008 was the peak for returning visitors; in fact, returning visitors peaked in 2006, while first-time visitors reached their highest point in 2008. The figures and series are also repeatedly reversed: for example, 2000 is given as 2,200 rather than about 8,000 for first-time visitors, and the later paragraph assigns the first-time series to returning visitors. This makes the comparisons unreliable. To improve, identify each line correctly, then report its main rise, fall and endpoint accurately, with a concise overview grounded in those trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two detail paragraphs, and transitions such as “To start with” and “However” signal movement between points. This gives the reader some organisation. However, the progression is weakened because the two detail paragraphs appear to describe the opposite visitor groups, and the overview’s claims do not align with the details. Some sentences also run together without adequate spacing or punctuation, such as “12000 people. In 2006”. Use one paragraph per clearly identified series, keep the order chronological, and check that each paragraph supports the overview. More precise linking and reference would help the reader follow the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
There is enough vocabulary to attempt a range of trend descriptions, including “rose significantly”, “fell”, “reached” and “decline”. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, which makes some descriptions unclear. “The least number of travellers” is less natural than “the fewest visitors”, while “the number returning individuals” and “people able to comeback” do not express the chart categories appropriately. “From there ownwards” also contains a spelling error and is not a suitable trend phrase. Aim for precise, conventional language such as “visitor numbers”, “peaked at”, “increased steadily” and “then declined”. Accurate naming of the two groups is especially important in this report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentences, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors in tense, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries recur. For example, “between 2000 to 2008” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; “reached it all time highest” has problems with the possessive and article; and “which remain increasingly steadily” has an incorrect verb form and structure. Several sentences also lack punctuation between clauses or after figures. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build longer sentences around a clear subject and verb. For instance, separate the 2004 and 2006 observations into complete sentences, then proofread punctuation and agreement.
