Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the two visitor groups and reports the initial fall in first-time visitors from about 8,000 in 2000 to 4,000 in 2002. It also notes that returning visitors began at a low level and increased. However, it stops before describing the later years, so it misses the main overall pattern: both groups rose after 2002, returning visitors peaked at around 15,200 in 2006 and then fell, while first-time visitors continued to increase. There is no clear overview or meaningful comparison of the series. The response is also only 47 words, well below the required 150; 13 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Include an overview and select key figures across the full period.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the information chronologically, moving from the starting point in 2000 to 2002, and the phrase “In comparison” signals a shift to the second series. These features give the short response some connection between ideas. However, the account ends abruptly and does not develop a clear progression through the remaining years. The opening sentence is separate from the data description, while the comparison is not completed with figures or a contrast in later trends. Punctuation and spacing also interrupt the flow, as in “Initially, the” and “at first .” Use a clear overview followed by logically grouped details for each series, with linking phrases that show changes and contrasts.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses relevant basic terms such as “first time visitors,” “returning visitors,” “high,” “low,” and “increasing,” so the reader can identify the subject and general direction of change. “In comparison” is also an appropriate attempt to signal contrast. However, the vocabulary is narrow and some choices are imprecise for describing a graph: “rate” is not the best term for visitor numbers, and “started increasing constantly” does not clearly express the trend. Repetition of “visitors” and simple evaluative words limits precision. Aim to use a wider range of accurate trend language, such as “number,” “declined,” “rose,” “peaked,” and “fell,” while ensuring that each description matches the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes simple clauses and an attempt at a longer sentence with “and then,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors in sentence formation and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “Initially, the rate … was high … and then gradually decreases” shifts from past to present tense; the trend should be described consistently in the past. The phrase “In 2000 it started increasing constantly” also lacks a comma after the introductory time phrase, and the spaces before punctuation in “at first .” are incorrect. Use past-tense verbs consistently and practise combining accurate clauses to describe changes across the full period.
