Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify both visitor groups and attempt an overview, noting that returning visitors were generally more numerous and that first-time visits rose towards the end. However, several key figures and trends are misreported, which limits how fully the graph is described. First-time visitors fell from about 8,000 to 4,000, then rose to roughly 11,800; the response instead gives an unclear rise “from 4000 to 12000” without accurately describing the stages. Returning visitors peaked at about 15,200 in 2006 and ended near 13,400, but the claim that the final figure was “1000” is substantially inaccurate. The overview also says returning visitors gradually declined, although they rose markedly until 2006. Select the main turning points and compare them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two visitor groups. This gives the reader some organisation, and transitions such as “Overall,” “To commence with,” and “On the other hand” signal the intended stages. However, progression within paragraphs is often unclear. The first-time visitor paragraph moves from the 2000–2002 fall to an imprecise account of the later rise, while the final paragraph gives figures in a confusing order (“From 2000 to 2002” followed by “From 2000 to 2004”). Some linking phrases are mechanical, and references such as “they” and “this period” are not always clear. Organise each series chronologically and use transitions to show the actual changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of trend vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “proliferated,” “deteriorate,” and “escalate,” showing an effort to describe change rather than repeat basic terms. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural in this context: “multifarious” does not mean the number or pattern of visitors, “ratio” is repeatedly used where “number” is needed, and “sluge” appears to be a misspelling of “sludge” or an attempted use of “slump.” There are also awkward phrases such as “visitors going back to their hometown” and “with ages.” These choices sometimes make the intended trend difficult to understand. Prefer precise chart language such as “visitor numbers,” “rose,” “fell,” and “reached a peak,” and check spelling and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and some attempts at longer structures, including “but at end of period…” and “Then with ages…,” so there is an effort to vary sentence forms. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in articles, agreement, tense, and sentence boundaries frequently affect clarity. For example, “Overall, ratio … are higher” has an article and agreement problem, while “they were about 8000 to 4000” does not form a clear comparison. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops, as in “Caryl Island. The ratio” and “1000 .From.” Use past-tense verbs consistently for the historical data, form complete comparisons (“fell from … to …”), and check punctuation and sentence boundaries.
