The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of first-time and returning tourists who visited Caryl Island between 2000 and 2008. Overall, both visitor categories experienced an upward trend by the end of the period, despite showing opposite trajectories initially. While first-time visitors were more numerous at first, returning visitors became the dominant group for the majority of the timeframe.
In 2000, approximately 8,000 people visited Caryl Island for the first time, while only 3,000 were returning visitors. By 2002, these trends reversed dramatically; first-time visitors halved to a low of 4,000, whereas repeat tourists surged to 10,000, overtaking the former group. From 2002 onward, both categories grew. Returning visitors peaked at just over 15,000 in 2006 before dropping slightly to around 13,500 in 2008. Meanwhile, first-time visitors recovered steadily from their 2002 dip, climbing consistently to reach nearly 12,000 by the final year. By this graph i can measure that first time visitors firstly decreased only once then increased gradually.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main trends and supports them with relevant figures: first-time visitors fall from about 8,000 to 4,000, while returning visitors rise from 3,000 to 10,000 by 2002; it also identifies the returning-visitors peak in 2006 and the later decline. The overview clearly notes the contrasting early movements and the later dominance of returning visitors. Most reported values align with the graph, with only harmless approximation. However, the final sentence, “By this graph i can measure…,” is not a useful data feature and repeats the earlier point that first-time visitors fell and then rose. Replace it with a meaningful comparison, such as the gap between the groups narrowing by 2008. This would make the coverage more consistently focused and developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account of the figures. Linking expressions such as “By 2002,” “From 2002 onward,” and “Meanwhile” help readers follow the changes and comparisons. This gives the report a coherent overall progression. However, the final sentence beginning “By this graph…” interrupts that progression: it shifts into a personal comment and repeats information already given. The extra spacing between sentences is also unnecessary, though it does not obscure meaning. To strengthen cohesion, end with a relevant comparison or omit the repeated comment, and use references such as “the former group” only where the comparison remains immediately clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “surged,” “overtaking,” “peaked,” “recovered steadily,” and “climbing consistently.” These choices describe movement effectively and avoid excessive repetition of “increased” and “decreased.” Some wording is less precise or natural for an academic report: “tourists” and “repeat tourists” are less consistent with the graph’s visitor categories, while “By this graph i can measure” is informal and awkward. “Opposite trajectories initially” is understandable, although a more direct description would be clearer. Aim for precise category labels and conventional trend language, and avoid personal commentary. This would improve flexibility and collocational control while preserving the clear meaning of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a good variety of sentence forms, including a complex overview sentence with “despite,” a contrast with “whereas,” and a time clause introduced by “By 2002.” Most sentences are grammatically controlled, and the past-tense reporting is consistent. A few errors remain. In the final sentence, the pronoun “i” should be capitalised, and the construction “By this graph i can measure that…” is awkward and does not fit the impersonal style of a data report. There is also an extra space after the full stop following “timeframe.” Revise the ending as a direct observation, for example, “First-time visitor numbers fell only once, before rising steadily.” This would retain the range while improving accuracy and control.
