Student answer (Band 5.0)

The provided line graph illustrates the number of first time visitors and returning visitiors who visited Caryl Island between 2000 to 2008.

Overall the number of first time visitors and returning visitors presents the rising as well as downfall throughout 2000 to 2008.

In 2002 the returnng visitors rises from 3000 to 10000 while the first time visitors falls 8000 to 4000. Although the number of first time visitors was greater than the returning visitors, the returnng visitors amount dominated the first time visitors in 2002.

There was a notable increase in 2004 where first time visitors rise to 600 and returnig visitors increased up to 12000.

Moving on to the year 2006 to 2008, the number of returning visitors kept rising before falling to less than 14000. However, the first time visitors increases steadily till 12000.

In contrary the returning visitors declined once in 2008 after constant rise whereas the first time visitors falls drastically once before increasing in a steady pace.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify both visitor groups and include several relevant figures, such as the fall in first-time visitors from 8,000 to 4,000 in 2002 and the rise in returning visitors to 15,200 in 2006. However, the overview is too general: “presents the rising as well as downfall” does not clearly state the main contrast that first-time visitors ended higher than they began, while returning visitors peaked in 2006 and then declined. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: first-time visitors reached about 6,000, not 600, in 2004, and the 2006–08 description should distinguish the returning visitors’ peak and fall from the first-time visitors’ continued rise. The response is also four words below the 150-word minimum, with copied prompt words excluded. Develop a precise overview and report the key trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence, moving from an overview to selected years, and time markers such as “In 2002,” “in 2004,” and “Moving on to the year 2006 to 2008” help the reader follow the timeline. However, the progression is weakened by repetition and some confusing links. The final sentence repeats the earlier account of the trends, and “In contrary” does not clearly introduce a meaningful contrast. The paragraphing also leaves the overview and details insufficiently separated. Organise the report into a clear overview followed by logically grouped comparisons, and avoid restating the same trend. Use linking expressions only where the relationship between the ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “notable increase,” “dominated,” “declined,” and “steadily,” showing an attempt to describe movement and comparison. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear. For example, “presents the rising as well as downfall” is not a natural way to describe changing figures, and “the returning visitors amount dominated” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “visitiors,” “returnng,” and “returnig.” Choose precise terms such as “rose,” “fell,” “peaked,” and “outnumbered,” and check spelling carefully. Repeating the same basic descriptions can be avoided by varying accurate trend language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “Although” and a sentence beginning “However.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. Examples include “between 2000 to 2008” (the preposition pattern should be “between … and …”), “the first time visitors falls 8000 to 4000” (missing “from” and inconsistent verb form), and “the number of first time visitors rise to 600” (subject–verb agreement and tense). The final sentence also combines clauses in a way that obscures the timeline. Use past-tense verbs consistently for the historical data, check agreement between subjects and verbs, and divide long or unclear sentences into shorter, accurate statements.
