Student answer (Band 6.0)
The graph presents the figure of first time tourists and returning tourists that visited Caryl Island between 2000 to 2008. The numbers of first time tourists dropped by nearly half then increased steadily reaching all time high, whereas returning tourists numbers were adding constantly thereafter the numbers were adding in an irregular pattern before slightly reducing.
From 2000 to 2002, first time visitors number were declining sharply from around 8000 to slightly above 4000 whilst the returning visitors in that same time period were adding in numbers recording nearly 10000 people from slightly below 3000 marking a signifcant increase.
After 2002 to 2008, the first time visitors to Caryl island were increasing at steadily marking the highest number of 12000 in 2008. The number of returning visitors was positively fluctuating from 2002 until it hit a maximum point at around 15000 people in 2006, although the figure reduced to below 14000 people in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrast: first-time visitors fell early and then rose, while returning visitors climbed to a peak before declining. The overview also captures the broad direction of both series, and most figures are close to the chart. However, saying first-time visitors reached an “all time high” is not fully supported by the period shown, and the 2008 figure is closer to 11,800 than 12,000. The description of returning visitors as “positively fluctuating” is unclear; the data show a steady rise from 2000 to 2006, followed by a fall. To strengthen the response, make the overview more precise and compare the two groups at key points, rather than relying on general descriptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an opening overview followed by paragraphs describing the earlier and later years. Time markers such as “From 2000 to 2002” and “After 2002 to 2008” help the reader follow the sequence. However, some linking is awkward or repetitive, particularly “in that same time period” and “thereafter the numbers were adding.” The second paragraph’s “After 2002 to 2008” is also an imprecise transition, and the overview’s long sentence combines several trends without clearly separating them. Use more direct transitions and organise the details consistently by period or visitor group. This would make the progression smoother and reduce the effort needed to interpret relationships between the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “declining sharply,” “increased steadily,” “maximum point,” and “reduced.” These choices communicate the main movements, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural for describing data: “numbers were adding,” “positively fluctuating,” and “marking the highest number” do not fit the intended meanings. “Tourists” is understandable, but “visitors” is the more precise term used in the graph. There is also a spelling error in “signifcant.” Aim for accurate collocations such as “the figure rose,” “fluctuated,” or “reached a peak,” and avoid repeating “number” when “figure” or “total” would be more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “whilst” and a concession introduced by “although.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “first time visitors number were declining” has incorrect agreement and word order; “returning tourists numbers were adding” also needs a possessive or a different construction. The phrase “were increasing at steadily” uses an incorrect adverb form, and “After 2002 to 2008” is not a grammatical time expression. Some sentences are long and would benefit from clearer clause boundaries. Practise accurate plural subjects and verb agreement, and use patterns such as “From 2002 to 2008, the number of first-time visitors increased steadily.”
