Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the two visitor groups and reports some relevant figures, including the starting values and the fall in first-time visitors to 4,000 in 2002. However, it addresses the task only partially: the account stops at “commencing 2004 to” and therefore leaves the later trends and comparisons unreported. The overview is also inaccurate or unclear. It says the total number of tourists was at its maximum in 2008, although the graph gives separate figures for each group, and identifies 2006 as the peak for returning visitors even though their highest value is in 2006 only if comparing the plotted years? The graph shows 15,200 in 2006, followed by a decline to 13,400 in 2008, so this peak is correct. The response is 45 words below the required minimum. To improve, complete the summary and give a clear overview of both series’ main movements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to organise the response with an overview followed by details, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” show an effort to connect information. However, progression is limited because the description ends mid-sentence at “commencing 2004 to,” leaving the account incomplete and preventing a coherent comparison across the full period. The overview and detail paragraph also do not clearly separate the main trends from individual figures. Some transitions feel mechanical rather than showing precise relationships between the data. Use a complete paragraph for the overview, then group the figures by trend—for example, the rise in returning visitors to 2006 and their subsequent fall—and ensure each sentence leads logically to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response shows some useful task vocabulary, including “first time,” “returning tourists,” “peaking,” and “drop,” so the reader can generally identify the intended trends. There is also an attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “visitors” throughout. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “significant figures of tourist,” “secondly,” “highest ratio,” and “second time coming tourists.” These expressions make the description less precise; “ratio” is especially unsuitable when reporting visitor numbers. Spelling errors such as “obsereved,” “woth,” “recorde,” “shorp,” and “maintaind” are noticeable. Aim for standard collocations such as “number of visitors,” “first-time visitors,” and “returning visitors,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a range of sentence forms, including an overview sentence and longer sentences linked with “whereas” and “whereas” is not used; the contrast is expressed through “whereas 8000 visitors for first time.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “The provide line graph illustrates” has an incorrect verb form, while “number of tourists … was maximum” is missing an article and uses an awkward construction. “2000 started with …” also treats a year as the subject of a visitor trend, and “whereas 8000 visitors for first time” is not a complete clause. The final sentence is unfinished. Practise complete clauses, accurate articles and agreement, and proofread punctuation and sentence endings.
