Student answer (Band 6.5)

The supplied line graph illustrates number of visitors who visited the Caryl island first time and how many returned from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it can be observed that the visitors who visit the island again rose substantially, while first time visitor decreased initally then increased over the period.

To begin with, the number of first time tourist was 8 thousand in 2000, which significantly fell to its lowest in the two years to 4000 in 2002. Then gradual surge started and number climbed up to 6000 in 2004, trend continued and in 2006 amount of visitors reached to just under the 10000. Then in the last two years the number of tourists increased to almost 12000 in 2008.

In contrast, in 2000, the number of tourists who returned to Caryl island was 3000. Then dramatic surge observed in visitors who returned was 10 thousand in 2002. Gentle increased can be seen in between 2002 and 2004 to 12000 visitors. Then returned to tourists reached at peak with around 15000 in 2006, and then dropped to 13000 visitors in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers the main movements in both series and gives a clear overview: returning visitors rose overall, while first-time visitors fell initially and then increased. The key figures are generally accurate, including the low of 4,000 in 2002 for first-time visitors and the returning-visitor peak of about 15,000 in 2006. The comparison between the two groups is also supported by the reported values. This is a well-focused summary with relevant selection of details. To make the account more fully developed, state the overall contrast more precisely—for example, returning visitors outnumbered first-time visitors from 2002 onward—and avoid vague descriptions such as “significantly” where a direct comparison would be clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The organisation is clear and easy to follow: an introduction is followed by an overview and then separate paragraphs describing each visitor group. “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “In contrast” help signal the stages and comparison, and the chronological order within each series is logical. Some linking is less controlled, however. Repeated use of “Then” makes the descriptions sound list-like, while “trend continued” does not clearly identify which trend is meant. The final paragraph also contains a sequence of short reporting clauses that could be connected more smoothly. Use a wider range of precise links, such as “thereafter” or “by comparison,” and make references explicit to improve the flow without adding unnecessary connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a line graph, and the response attempts a range of trend language, including “fell,” “surge,” “climbed,” “peak,” and “dropped.” These choices make the main movements understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “visitors who visit the island again,” “Gentle increased,” and “returned to tourists” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “initally” and “first time tourist.” Aim for precise, conventional graph language and check word forms. For example, use “returning visitors,” “a gradual increase,” and “reached a peak” rather than the less natural phrases in the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses both simple sentences and some longer structures, including a relative clause in “which significantly fell” and time clauses such as “Then in the last two years…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include missing articles in “illustrates number of visitors” and “reached to just under,” subject–verb agreement in “Gentle increased can be seen,” and awkward tense or clause construction in “Then dramatic surge observed.” Several sentences also omit a clear subject or use incomplete patterns. To improve, check articles and agreement, and build each trend sentence around a clear subject and verb—for instance, “The number of returning visitors then rose sharply to 10,000.”
