The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the thousands of visitors who visited Caryl Island firt time and others who returned to visit again between the years 200o to 2008.
Overall, the fisrt time travellers declined in the initial years but then increased rapidly in next years while returning visitors expanded initially but fluctuated in ending years.
The graph shows that a huge amount of visitors around 8 thousand people visited this island for first time but then numbers droped in next two years and only 4 thousand people travelled to this island in 2002. This is the turning point in numbers as after this numbers increased rapidly and by the end of 2008 a big amount of 12 thousand people saw the island first time.
But the case of returning visitors is different from this one. While only small figures around 1500 returning seesighters travelled to this island in beigining year but then these figures expanded day by day and numbers reached to 15 thousand in year 2006 and then sudden decline in last two years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrast between the two visitor groups and provide a clear overview: first-time visitors fall before rising, while returning visitors increase and then decline. Several key figures are also reported accurately, including about 8,000 first-time visitors in 2000, 4,000 in 2002, and roughly 12,000 in 2008. This covers the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, the returning-visitor account contains a significant misreading: the starting figure was about 3,000, not 1,500, and the rise was not simply steady “day by day.” The final figure was around 13,400, so specifying the size of the decline would make the comparison more complete. The overview and relevant data are strong, but precision and fuller coverage are still needed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing each visitor group. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall” and “But” help signal relationships. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise. “This is the turning point in numbers” is unclear, and “the case of returning visitors is different from this one” repeats the contrast without adding much. The final paragraph also moves from a general rise to a sudden decline without clearly stating that the peak occurred in 2006 and the fall was by 2008. Use clearer references and organise each paragraph around the start, peak or low point, and end value to strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of trend vocabulary, including “declined,” “increased rapidly,” “expanded,” and “sudden decline,” so the main movements are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “turning point.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a graph report: “a huge amount of visitors” should use a countable expression, “returning seesighters” is not an appropriate term, and “a big amount” is informal and imprecise. Spelling errors such as “firt,” “fisrt,” “droped,” and “beigining” also reduce control. Prefer precise terms such as “number,” “figure,” “rose,” and “fell,” and check spelling carefully; this would make the vocabulary more accurate and suitable for academic reporting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrastive clause “While only small figures … but then…” and the sentence beginning “This is the turning point…”. These attempts show some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, some sentence patterns are not controlled: “While … but then” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly, and “numbers droped … and only 4 thousand people travelled” shifts awkwardly between a graph figure and people travelling. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, for example “visited this island for first time” and “in next two years.” Use a simpler, accurate pattern such as “The figure fell to 4,000 in 2002, before rising…” and check that each sentence has a clear grammatical structure.
