Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given line graph illustrates figures of first time visitors and returning visitors of Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

First time visitors shows dramtically change throught-out the time, it deccelerates then accelerates. Returning visitors esclates and then fall at the end.

Figures tell us First time visitors in 2000 are 8000 which decreases to 4000 in, 2002 and then accelerates substantially to 2008. Returning visitors accelerates sharply to 10000 in 2002, then slighty reaches a peak 15000 in 2006 and then fall to 13000 in 2008.

If we compare both figures both shows opposite, like in 2000 number of returning visitors are least and first time visitors are high, but at the end of 2008, Returning visitors take lead.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two visitor groups and report several key figures accurately, including the first-time visitors’ fall from 8,000 to 4,000 and returning visitors’ rise to about 15,000 in 2006. You also note that returning visitors lead by 2008. However, the overview is brief and does not clearly summarise the full pattern: first-time visitors recover after 2002, while returning visitors peak in 2006 and then decline. The claim that the groups show “opposite” patterns is too broad, since both rise between 2002 and 2006. The response is 120 words, below the required 150, so the report is underdeveloped and omits useful comparisons, such as the groups’ relative numbers in 2004 and 2006.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, a short overview, details for each visitor group, and a final comparison. This makes the main information reasonably easy to follow. However, the organisation is compressed, with several distinct points crowded into short paragraphs, and the final comparison repeats information rather than extending the analysis. Linking is also limited: “then” is used repeatedly, while “If we compare both figures” introduces a comparison that is not fully explained. A clearer structure would separate the overall trends from the year-by-year details and use more precise links to show contrast, such as “whereas” or “by comparison.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant trend vocabulary, including “decreases,” “accelerates,” “peak,” and “take lead,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “figures of … visitors,” “First time visitors shows,” and “Returning visitors esclates” do not express the data fluently. “Accelerates” is also not the best verb for visitor numbers; “rises” or “increases” is more appropriate. Spelling errors such as “dramtically,” “throught-out,” “deccelerates,” and “slighty” are noticeable. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language and check spelling, while varying verbs such as “rise,” “fall,” “recover,” and “reach a peak.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your response includes simple statements and some attempts to connect events, for example, “Returning visitors accelerates sharply to 10000 in 2002, then … reaches a peak.” However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make the sentences awkward. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “First time visitors shows” and “both shows,” and the opening comparison lacks a clear grammatical structure. Articles and prepositions are also missing or misplaced in phrases such as “reaches a peak 15000” and “decreases to 4000 in, 2002.” Use plural subjects with plural verbs, add “of” after “a peak,” and avoid inserting a comma between a preposition and its year. More accurate sentence patterns would make your data easier to read.
