The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of people who visited Caryl Island for the first time and the returning visitors from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, the returning visitors to Caryl Island were significantly higher than the first time visitors. Only from 2000 to 2001 fist time visitors were grater in number. First time visitors had a sharp decline initially whereas, returning visitors had sharp increase.
From 2000 to 2002 the number of first time visitor halfed from 8000 to 4000. In contrast the returnig visitors increased more than tripled from 3000 to 10000 in 2002. Gradually the first time visitors saw a increase between 2002 to 2008. In 2004 the number increased to 6000. Similarly, the returning visitors also increased to 12000. Between 2004 to 2006 the numbers for fist time visitors climbed to 9000 mark. Whereas the returing visitor had peak of more than 15000. The returning visitor saw decline in number between 2006 to 2008 with numbers reducing to 13000. The number of fisrt timers further increased and peak at almost 12000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main contrast and broad trends: returning visitors rose to a peak and then fell, while first-time visitors declined before recovering. Several figures are also reported accurately, including the 2000 and 2002 values and the 2008 levels. However, the overview contains a factual error: first-time visitors were not higher only from 2000 to 2001; returning visitors outnumbered them at every year shown. The account also says the first-time figure reached 9,000 in 2006, which is a reasonable approximation, but the comparison with the returning visitors’ peak could be clearer. To strengthen the response, ensure the overview reflects the full period accurately and compare the two series directly at key points, rather than relying mainly on separate descriptions of each line.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to a chronological account of the figures. Time markers such as “From 2000 to 2002” and “Between 2004 to 2006” help readers follow the changes, and “In contrast” signals a relevant comparison. However, some links are mechanical or awkward, particularly the repeated use of “Similarly” and “Whereas” to begin sentences. The overview’s claim about which group was larger also disrupts the otherwise logical account. Grouping the main turning points into a more direct comparison—for example, the early fall in first-time visitors alongside the sharp rise in returning visitors—would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “sharp decline,” “increased,” “climbed,” “peak,” and “reducing,” which allows you to describe the graph’s main movements. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “increased more than tripled” combines two different ways of describing change, while “saw a increase” is an inaccurate collocation. There are also several spelling errors, including “fist,” “returnig,” “returing,” and “fisrt,” which detract from the accuracy of the report. Aim for precise, consistent expressions such as “more than tripled” or “increased by more than three times,” and proofread spelling. A broader set of accurate verbs for rises and falls would add flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast structures such as “In contrast” and clauses describing changes over time. The main information is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Only from 2000 to 2001 fist time visitors were grater in number” has an awkward sentence structure, and “the number of first time visitor halfed” has problems with number agreement and verb form. In “Between 2004 to 2006,” the time expression is not formed correctly; use “Between 2004 and 2006.” Punctuation around “Whereas” and “whereas” also needs attention, as these clauses should be joined appropriately rather than left as fragments. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and singular/plural agreement.
