Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the statistics between new and returning visitors in a Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Overall, new visitors were more than returning visitors in the begining, however returning visitors took the lead from 2002 and continue the uprsing trend which stablise its dominant position till the end.
First time visitors started visiting from 2000 which was a number of 8000 people before experienced a sharp decline in 2002 to 4000. Then it continuously increased and ended to around 11,900 in 2008.
Returning visitors started with a low number of around 3000 in 2000 compared to first time visitors. Then it increased significantly to 10000 in 2002 and continue the upward trend till 2006 to approximately 16000. However, it shows a slide decrease at the end which not reduced its number than the number of new visitors.
In conclusion, the Caryl Island showed its repeat value more than the new entrance over the period. However the ending year indicates its downward trend in repeated visitors and upward trend in new visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: first-time visitors fall from about 8,000 to 4,000 before rising to roughly 11,900, while returning visitors climb from around 3,000 to a peak and then decline. The overview also correctly notes that returning visitors overtake first-time visitors from 2002 and remain higher through 2008. These are relevant, well-selected features, and the figures are generally consistent with the graph. To make the account more fully precise, report the returning-visitors peak as approximately 15,200 in 2006 rather than “approximately 16,000,” and clarify that the series rises to 2006 before falling in 2008; it does not continue an upward trend throughout the period. The final conclusion repeats the overview rather than adding a distinct comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, separate descriptions of the two visitor groups, and a concluding statement. This makes the main trends easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Then,” and “However” help signal changes and contrasts. The two data paragraphs also provide a sensible basis for comparison. Some cohesion is less controlled, however: “continue the upward trend till 2006” is followed by a separate concluding paragraph that repeats the same rise-and-fall contrast, while “which not reduced its number” makes the relationship between the decline and the comparison unclear. For stronger progression, integrate the ending comparison into the returning-visitors paragraph and avoid restating the overview.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “sharp decline,” “increased significantly,” “upward trend,” and “dominant position,” which helps describe movement and comparison. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, limiting precision. For example, “statistics between new and returning visitors” does not clearly describe what the graph shows, and “repeat value” and “new entrance” are unsuitable for visitor numbers. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “begining,” “uprsing,” and “stablise.” Aim for standard chart language and check spelling carefully; phrases such as “the number of first-time visitors” and “returning visitors remained more numerous” would express the data more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of sentence forms, including contrast clauses with “however” and time clauses such as “before experienced a sharp decline.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to reduce grammatical control. For instance, “before experienced” needs a subject and a correctly formed verb (“before falling”), while “returning visitors … continue the uprsing trend” needs past-tense agreement (“continued”). In “which not reduced its number,” the clause is incomplete and the verb form is incorrect. Articles and prepositions also need attention in “in a Caryl Island” and “ended to around 11,900.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build complex sentences around complete clauses.
