Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph provides information on the figures of first time visitors and returning visitors who traveled Caryl Island. The data was taken from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, it can be seen at the start of the study that first time visitor had the highest number of visit in Caryl Island; however, by the end of the period, returning visitors took turn and gained the greatest figure of visit.

In detail, first time visitor had the highest accounted visit in Caryl Island in 2000 at 8,000 people. This took a dramatic drop by 4000 in 2002, which is half of that of the former. It can be seen that in the succeeding years, it gradually rose peaking nearly at 12,000.

A different pattern was seen in returning visitors that started off at around 3,000 then relatively climbed to 10,000 in 2002. This figure steadily increase in the following years culminating at approximately 15,000 in 2006. By 2008, a slight reduction was noted below 14,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the overall contrast accurately: first-time visitors begin higher, while returning visitors finish with the larger figure. The main trends and several key values are also reported correctly, including 8,000 and 4,000 for first-time visitors and the returning-visitors rise to about 15,000 in 2006. The account is relevant and covers both series. However, the first-time series is not fully precise: it rises to about 6,000 in 2004 and then to roughly 9,300 in 2006 before reaching around 11,800 in 2008, rather than simply “peaking nearly at 12,000” in the succeeding years. Clarifying these stages and the final comparison would make the data summary more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with the two visitor groups treated separately. This gives the reader a clear progression from the broad comparison to the individual trends. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In detail,” “A different pattern,” and “By 2008” help signal the stages of the report. The sequence within each series is generally easy to follow, although the first-time visitor paragraph compresses the changes after 2002 and leaves the 2004 and 2006 figures unstated. More explicit links between those stages would strengthen the progression. Overall, cohesion is flexible and the paragraphing is appropriate, with only some room for clearer development.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “dramatic drop,” “steadily increase,” “culminating,” and “slight reduction.” These choices help distinguish rises, falls and turning points. Some expressions, however, are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “figures of … visitors,” “highest accounted visit,” and “took turn” do not express the intended comparisons clearly. “Peaking nearly at 12,000” also suggests a single peak, although the series continues to rise through 2008. Aim for standard collocations such as “number of visitors,” “recorded,” and “overtook,” and use precise trend language. The meaning remains clear, but word choice and collocation are not consistently controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast introduced by “however” and the time clause “By 2008.” Most sentences communicate the intended trend, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and verb forms: “first time visitor had” should be plural or use a singular construction consistently, and “This figure steadily increase” needs a past-tense verb. The phrase “the highest number of visit” also shows difficulty with number and article patterns. Review subject–verb agreement, plural forms and past-tense consistency when describing historical data. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside the sentence variety already attempted, would improve control.
