The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph compares the information from the year 2000 to 2008 and tells the number of torists who travelled to the Caryl Island for first time, with the data of number of travellers who had already seen the island and they came back. Overall, the number of first time visitors were exceeded in 2008, whereas, declined in 2002. Moreover, the returning visitors were in decreased number in 2000, however, increased number of returning visitors were in 2006.
The graph for the first time travelling by tourists show a small decrease then an inclined increase pattern. The travellers' number decreased half from 8000 to 4000 from the year 2000 to 2002. After that the trvellers' number begun to increase. In 2004, the number incined to 6000, in 2006, it was between 8000 and 10000, however, in 2008, the number exceeded to 12000.
The returning tourists on the line graph shows a zig-zag pattern but still the number is much more as compare to first time travellers. In 2000, the number of visitors coming back was 3000. Moreover, the number increased to 10000 in the year 2002. The number was slightly increased to 12000 in 2004, on the other hand, it was 15000 in 2006. Lastly, the number decreased slightly below 14000 in the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both visitor groups and report the main movements across the period, including the first-time visitors’ fall from 8,000 to 4,000 and the returning visitors’ rise to a peak in 2006 before declining. The figures are generally close to the chart. However, the overview is unclear and includes inaccurate comparisons: “the number of first time visitors were exceeded in 2008” does not clearly state that first-time visitors rose overall, and returning visitors were not “in decreased number in 2000.” Also, returning visitors outnumbered first-time visitors in every year, not just generally “much more.” Make the overview a precise summary of the contrasting trends and identify the highest and lowest points; this would make the response more complete and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for each visitor group. The chronology within those paragraphs is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “After that,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” help guide the reader. This coherent structure is a strength. However, some transitions are mechanical or create confusing contrasts, as in “The number was slightly increased to 12000 in 2004, on the other hand, it was 15000 in 2006.” The overview also combines several ideas without making their relationships clear. Use fewer, more precise connectors and organise each paragraph around a clear trend, rather than linking every data point with a transition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a graph, including “decreased,” “increased,” “zig-zag pattern,” and “slightly below,” so the main information remains understandable. There is also some attempt to vary expressions for visitors. However, inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable: “number of first time travelling by tourists,” “inclined increase pattern,” and “increased number … were in 2006” sound unnatural or obscure the intended trend. Spelling errors such as “torists,” “trvellers,” and “incined” also reduce control. Aim for standard graph language and accurate forms, for example “the number of first-time visitors,” “rose steadily,” and “reached a peak.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas,” “however,” and “after that,” and the reader can generally understand the sequence of changes. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “The graph … show” should be “shows,” while “the number … were exceeded” has an incorrect verb form and agreement. In “the number increased to 10000 … Moreover, the number was slightly increased,” the passive construction is not appropriate for describing the trend. Commas also join contrasting clauses awkwardly in places. Check agreement and verb forms, and use active trend verbs such as “rose” and “fell” in otherwise varied sentence structures.
