Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph gives information about two kinds of visitors, first time visitors and returning visitors, who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, the graph shows that the number of returning visitors is less from the half of first time visitors in 2000 but in 2008 the number of returning visitors become greater to first time visitors.

In the begining of 2nd century, the number of first time visitors is greater than the returning visitors but now the first time visitors start coming down and returning visitors number start blowing up and increase fastly till 2002.

In 2002 the number of first time visitors stoped decreasing. And now, both visitors started increasing rapidly and the returning vistors hits the number 15000 which is the highest reaching number, here its stop increasing and decrease a little bit and stoped at number near to 14000 in 2008. The number os first time visitors donot decrease after 2002, they increase climb up frequently and reached to the number 12000 in 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify both visitor groups and cover the full period, with relevant figures such as first-time visitors falling to about 4,000 in 2002 and returning visitors peaking at roughly 15,000 in 2006. Your overview also recognises the broad change in their relative numbers. However, it misstates the comparison in 2000: returning visitors were fewer than half the first-time total, not “less from the half,” and by 2008 returning visitors were still higher, rather than becoming greater than first-time visitors. The claim that first-time visitors were initially greater is correct, but the overview would be clearer if it summarised the contrasting overall trends and the 2006 peak accurately. Some details are reported less fully or precisely than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable introduction, overview and sequence of details, and it generally moves forward through the years. This gives the reader a basic structure. However, the progression is weakened by unclear time references such as “now” and “in the begining of 2nd century,” which make it difficult to know which period is being described. Several ideas are joined in long sentences, especially the account of returning visitors reaching a peak and then declining, so the relationships between events are not always easy to follow. Use one paragraph for the overview and separate, clearly ordered paragraphs for the data, with precise links such as “By 2002” and “After peaking in 2006.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “first time visitors,” “returning visitors,” “increase,” “decrease” and “highest.” This is enough to communicate the general subject and direction of change. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear: “blowing up” is too informal for a graph description, while “increase fastly” and “hits the number” are not natural collocations. Spelling errors such as “begining,” “stoped” and “vistors” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of trend expressions and use neutral academic language, for example “rose sharply,” “reached a peak” and “declined slightly.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the reader can usually understand the main trends. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer sentences. For example, “the number of returning visitors become greater to first time visitors” has problems with tense and comparison structure, while “both visitors started increasing” does not clearly express the intended relationship. There are also errors in articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “the number os first time visitors donot decrease.” Use past-tense forms consistently for this completed period, check singular subjects such as “the number,” and divide complex descriptions into shorter sentences. More accurate sentence patterns would make your comparisons much clearer.
