Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given graph illustrates the number of people who visited Caryl island either first time or returned from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, we can observe that the ratio of returning visitors is higher compared to first time visitors. Returning visitors rose from 2000 to 2006 and gradually declined till 2008. Whereas, the first time visitors peaked during 2000 but shaprly declined in 2002, and gradually improved after that.

8000 people visited first time during 2000, however it decreased to 4000 in 2002 and slowly rose till 12000 by the final year. Whereas returning visitors had a very distinct graph compared to the former. In the year 2000, there were only around 3000 people who returned to the island but a dramatic rise was observed during the span of two years which increased to 10000 visitors by 2002. The graph kept increasing till 2006 and reached upto 15000 visitors. However, declined to 13000 visitors by the year 2008.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main contrast and give a clear overview: returning visitors rose to a peak in 2006 before falling, while first-time visitors fell initially and then recovered. Most figures are accurately reported, including the starting values and the returning-visitor peak. However, the final first-time figure is given as 12,000, whereas the graph shows approximately 11,800, and the overview says first-time visitors “peaked during 2000,” which could imply their highest value occurred then; in fact, they finish higher. The comparison that returning visitors were consistently more numerous is also useful. To make the account more precise, state the overall endpoint comparison clearly and avoid wording that overstates or obscures the first-time trend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and a paragraph of supporting figures, with a generally logical progression from the overall patterns to year-by-year details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Whereas” and “However” help signal contrasts, and the two visitor groups are easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth: “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment in the overview, and “However, declined to 13000 visitors” lacks a clear subject. The repeated use of “Whereas” and “However” also makes cohesion somewhat formulaic. For stronger progression, connect contrasting clauses within complete sentences and use clearer references when moving between the two series.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “dramatic rise,” “gradually declined” and “peaked,” which helps describe changes rather than merely list figures. Some choices are not fully precise or natural: “the ratio of returning visitors” suggests a proportion, although the graph shows numbers, and “a very distinct graph” does not clearly describe the trend. There are also spelling and form slips, such as “shaprly” and “upto.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and polish of the vocabulary. To strengthen this area, choose standard trend language and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “although” and “which,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist. For example, “either first time or returned” is not a parallel construction, and “Whereas, the first time visitors…” is an incomplete dependent clause. The sentence “However, declined to 13000 visitors” also omits its subject. In addition, “the number of people who visited … either first time or returned” needs more accurate article and verb phrasing. Aim to make each sentence complete, keep contrasting clauses grammatically connected, and check articles and verb forms; this will improve control without sacrificing sentence variety.
