Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates how many visitors had gone to Caryl Island for the first time and returning back from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, number of visitors returning is quoted for the highest, whereas number of first time visitors is quoted for the lowest. At the start of period less number of returning visitors are there, where more number of first time visitors are there.

Initially, in 2000 around 3000 people returning visitors are there, later it overtook first time visitors in 2001 and saw a sharp rise to 10000 by in 2002. Despit people returning were nearly 15000 in 2006, it shows a dramatic decline to around 13000 people in 2008. On the contrast, 8000 people visited for the first time in 2000. Then it shows a slight fall to 4000 in 2002. However, it rose significantly to 6000 in 2004, 8000 in 2006 and 12000 in 2008. Over the period it rose gradually.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visitor groups and identify the main contrast: returning visitors rise sharply before falling, while first-time visitors dip and then increase. The figures are generally close to the chart, including the 2000 and 2002 values and the high point for returning visitors in 2006. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: first-time visitors do not remain “the lowest,” since they reach about 11,800 by 2008, while returning visitors finish higher at about 13,400. The claim that returning visitors overtook first-time visitors in 2001 is not directly supported by the chart’s two-year data points. To make the report more complete, state the overall end-point comparison clearly and use the approximate 2004 and 2006 first-time figures more accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a final paragraph describing the two series. It also uses sequencing and contrast markers such as “Initially,” “However,” and “On the contrast,” which help the reader follow the changes. However, the overview repeats ideas that are then covered in the detail paragraph, and the grouping of the two series within one long paragraph makes comparisons less easy to track. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “At the start of period … where” and “Over the period it rose gradually,” whose reference is not fully explicit. Organise the details into clearer comparisons, and use pronouns and linking phrases that make it unmistakable which visitor group each sentence describes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “sharp rise,” “dramatic decline,” “slight fall,” and “rose significantly.” These choices show an attempt to vary the language rather than repeat “increase” and “decrease.” However, several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “returning back,” “number of visitors returning is quoted for the highest,” and “people returning visitors.” “On the contrast” is also an inaccurate phrase, and “Despit” contains a spelling error. Prefer standard chart-reporting expressions such as “returning visitors,” “the figure for returning visitors was highest,” and “by contrast.” More precise vocabulary for describing the final values would also help avoid the misleading claim that first-time visitors were the lowest throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is some variety in sentence forms, including a concessive clause in “Despite people returning were nearly 15000 in 2006…” and contrastive sentences beginning with “However.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Overall, number of visitors” needs an article, while “At the start of period less number … are there” has problems with articles, word order, and sentence construction. The phrase “it overtook … in 2001” also presents an unsupported intermediate year, and “to 10000 by in 2002” contains an incorrect preposition pattern. Use past-tense reporting consistently and build simpler, controlled sentences around the figures; then add complex clauses only when their grammar is secure.
