Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the public that is visiting Caryl Island for the first time and also the coming back visitors who visited the Island from 2000 to 2008.

Overall, in the beginning ,number of first time visitors was high while the returning visitor 's number was low, but that reversed within the specific time of eight years.

To start with the first time visitor, the visitor ratio was eight thousand in the first year that was 2000. This Number of visitors declined to four thousand in 2002. After that, the graph rose up gradually to almost 12,000 visitor untill 2008, the specific time boundary.

Afterthat, the returning visitor number was almost 3,000 in the year 2000, it remained to increase steadily untill 2006, where it started to decline abruptly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two visitor groups and give a relevant overview that their relative numbers reversed over the period. You also report the first-time visitors’ fall from 8,000 to 4,000 and subsequent rise, and note that returning visitors increased before declining. However, the account is incomplete: the returning series is not given its key figures or final value, and the first-time figure of almost 12,000 is presented as a gradual rise from 2002, although it first reaches about 6,000 in 2004 and then rises more sharply. The response also stops before fully describing the 2008 comparison. It is 20 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited development. Include the main turning points and endpoint values to make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs beginning with “To start with” and “Afterthat” for the two series. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly after saying the returning figure began to decline, so the progression is not completed and the comparison at the end is missing. Some linking is also mechanical or unclear: “After that” and “Afterthat” repeat the same transition, while “but that reversed within the specific time of eight years” does not clearly explain how the figures changed. Use a complete final sentence and connect the two series through their shared turning points and end values.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “declined,” “increase steadily,” and “decline abruptly,” which helps describe movement in the graph. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a data summary, such as “the public that is visiting,” “coming back visitors,” and “visitor ratio.” “The graph rose up” also describes the graph rather than clearly naming the number of visitors. Spelling and spacing issues, including “untill” and “Afterthat,” further reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent terms such as “first-time visitors” and “returning visitors,” and use precise verbs such as “the figure fell” or “the number climbed.” This would make the limited range more effective and the trends easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “Overall … was high while … was low” and the time clause “where it started to decline.” The main trends are generally understandable, but some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate. For example, “the visitor ratio was eight thousand” lacks a clear grammatical subject for the figure, and “it remained to increase steadily” uses an incorrect verb pattern. There are also inconsistent articles and number forms in phrases such as “the returning visitor number” and “almost 12,000 visitor.” Punctuation and spacing around commas are uneven. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences with “the number of visitors,” and check verb patterns, articles, and plural nouns.
