The line graph shows the number of first time visitors and returning visitors who visited Caryl Island from 2000 to 2008.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the amount of people visiting Caryl Island for the first time and those who were there more than once between the years 2000 and 2008.
Overall, the number of returning visitors was rising until around 2006, when it decreased. The opposite can be seen in first time visitors, since they have been increasing since around 2002.
Those who were returning to the island were approximately 3000 people in 2000 and have been rising until around 2006, when they reached their peak with around 15000 people. Despite that after around 2005 the amount of returning travellers started to drop, reaching just bellow 14000 people in 2008.
As for the first time visitors the opposite trend can be seen. In 2000 they were 8000 and they dramatically dropped by 4000 people around 2002. After that, the number steadly increased, reaching its peak in 2008 with almost 12000 people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response identifies the main patterns accurately: returning visitors rise to a high point around 2006 before falling, while first-time visitors recover after 2002 and finish substantially higher. The figures cited—about 3,000 and 15,000 for returning visitors, and 8,000, 4,000 and nearly 12,000 for first-time visitors—are consistent with the graph. The overview also makes a useful comparison between the trends. To strengthen the report further, describe the relative positions at the end: returning visitors remain slightly more numerous in 2008. The claim that the decline began “after around 2005” is imprecise, since the graph shows the fall between 2006 and 2008; keep the time references tied closely to the plotted years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with a logical progression from the overall patterns to each visitor group. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Despite that,” and “As for” help signal shifts and comparisons, and the reader can follow the account without difficulty. Some cohesion is less controlled: “The opposite can be seen” and “the opposite trend” repeat the same comparison, while “Despite that” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. The returning-visitors paragraph also moves from the peak to the decline without a precise transition. Use a wider range of concise links and make references explicit—for example, state directly that the figure fell from its 2006 peak by 2008.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the graph, and phrases such as “reached their peak,” “dramatically dropped,” and “steadily increased” communicate the main movements. There is some flexibility in referring to the groups as “first time visitors” and “returning travellers.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for a formal data report: “amount of people” is better expressed as “number of visitors,” and “those who were there more than once” is wordy. Spelling errors in “steadly” and “bellow” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise graph-reporting collocations and check spelling; this would make the vocabulary more natural and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex structures, including a subordinate clause in “when it decreased” and a contrastive construction beginning “As for the first time visitors.” Most sentences are understandable, and the main trends are conveyed clearly. Some grammatical choices are less accurate or consistent. The opening phrase “the amount of people” uses an unsuitable count-noun construction, and “the number … was rising” shifts into “they have been increasing,” creating an inconsistent tense perspective for a finished period. “Despite that after around 2005…” is also awkwardly structured, and the extra spacing around punctuation affects presentation. Use past simple consistently for the completed years and revise sentence openings so clauses connect cleanly.
