We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that zoos are no longer necessary and should be closed because animals need to live in their natural habitat. Although i agree that wild animals should not be treated cruelly but i disagree that all zoos should be closed. Well managed zoos plays an important part in wildlife conservation and public education.
One of the main advantages of the zoo is that they protect the endangered species from extinction. Many animals loose their habitat due to unfavorable living conditions caused by pollution or deforestation. Therefore, the number of such species decline over time posing them at a risk of being extinct. Nowadays, zoos often take part in breeding programs to increase the number of rare species and protecting them from being extinct. For example, several endangered species of giant pandas and some types of tigers have benefitted from these breeding programs and regained their population.
Another reason to support the zoos is because they educate the public about wildlife. Many people, especially children, gets an opportunity to see the animals in the zoos which, otherwise, they would never observe in wild. This experience helps people understand the importance of protecting nature and encourage them to support conservation efforts. Seeing animals in real life often creates a strong impression rather than watching them on tv or reading books.
However, it is true that some zoos do not provide the suitable environment for animals. Small cages and poor care can cause stress and affect their health. Government should ensure that zoos follow strict animal welfare standards and those who fail to meet the requirements should be closed.
In conclusion, i disagree that all zoos should be closed. Instead, they should be properly managed so that they can protect endangered species, educate the public and provide animals the safe environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a balanced position: while acknowledging the ethical concerns regarding animal welfare, you argue against closing all zoos, citing their roles in conservation and education. Your ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the mention of giant pandas and tigers. The argument is consistent throughout the essay, and you provide a logical counter-argument regarding poor zoo conditions, which adds depth to your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction clearly outlines the main points you will discuss to provide a stronger roadmap for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'One of the main advantages,' 'Another reason,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For instance, the link between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'wildlife conservation,' 'endangered species,' and 'breeding programs' are used correctly and appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'decline' used where 'decline' (as a verb) or 'declining' might be more accurate. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is adequate rather than wide. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('zoos plays,' 'number of such species decline,' 'children, gets'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' used for the first-person pronoun. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and basic capitalization rules.
