Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, it is believed that animals should not be kept in zoos as they are meant to walk around freely in natural environment. According to me, wild animals should stay in forests hence, zoos should be closed.

In the beginning, there are several reasons which support the idea of closing zoos. Firstly, animals are meant to be free rather than keeping them in a cage or in restricted area. For example, big animals such as elephant, bear or lion required wide area for their survival. Sometimes, every zoo can not meet those requirements. At the end, animals have to suffer. Moreover, another major reason is that while living in zoos animals have to follow the rules of zoos which include how much food intake they should take and where they can visit. Which at the end effect them wrongly. Even in some cases, some animals can lack their survival skills. For instance, It is not obliged that animals have to stay in zoo, there can be a situation when they need to send back to forest. If they forgot or lack those survival skills such as hunting, running or saving themselves from hunters, They will not be able to survive in forest.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 202 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the argument remains underdeveloped and lacks a concluding paragraph. While you clearly state your position in the introduction, the supporting points regarding animal survival skills are not fully explored or extended. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with more detailed examples and ensure you provide a clear conclusion that summarises your main points. The current length prevents a full exploration of the topic, which is a requirement for higher band scores.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay shows some logical organization through the use of transition words like 'Firstly' and 'Moreover'. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The paragraphing is insufficient; the essay consists of only two short paragraphs, whereas a standard IELTS essay should have at least four (introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion). Some cohesive devices are used, but they are basic. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus to improve the overall flow of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple phrasing such as 'wild animals should stay in forests' and 'effect them wrongly'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'effect' instead of 'affect' and 'required' instead of 'require'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to animal welfare and conservation. Avoid repetitive language and aim for more sophisticated synonyms to express your ideas more clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'every zoo can not meet' (should be 'cannot'), 'at the end' (should be 'ultimately'), and 'they need to send back' (should be 'they need to be sent back'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and passive voice constructions. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms will significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
