Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people believe that animals should not be imprisoned in zoo, thus zoos are no longer needed. I strongly disagree with this view because, I believe animals can be dangerous or in danger, if kept outside the zoo.

I disagree with this argument due to several reasons. Firstly, few animals are wild in nature like, tiger, lion and bear and could be harmful for the society. As they can attack or even kill the people, if they are allowed to live freely. For example, few days ago, a tiger escaped from a Lahore zoo, attacked on many peoples, and few of them got serious injuries. These animals can also destroy public properties, such as plants, vehicles, or even roads. Moreover, people specially children will get afraid from animals and could not go outside for their routine jobs.

However, zoos are better place to keep animals in many ways, as they would get food and a place to live according to their requirements. Additionally, zoo officials arrange their routine medical checkups, and give them treatments if needed. Finally, people could harm them in order to get benefits. For instance, tiger and lion's skin can be used to make valuable products/goods (jackets, clothes, shoes, and bags). Moreover, feathers of peacock and pigeon are being used as decorative pieces in houses for a aesthetic view.

In a nut-shell, zoos play an important role in taking care of animals and as well as in protecting humans from a possible animal attack.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against closing zoos. However, the essay falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding public safety and animal welfare are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The example of the tiger in Lahore is specific, but the discussion on animal products could be expanded to better support the argument. Because the response is under the word count, it fails to fully develop all points, leading to a lower score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In a nut-shell' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the safety argument and the welfare argument could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the brevity of the conclusion limits the sense of closure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'imprisoned', 'requirements', and 'aesthetic view'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get afraid from animals' (should be 'afraid of') and 'routine jobs' (in the context of going outside). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people specially children will get afraid' (missing commas and incorrect preposition), 'attacked on many peoples' (incorrect preposition and pluralization of 'people'), and 'as well as in protecting' (redundant 'as'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score.
