Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is argued that zoos should be shut down because animals are no longer kept in zoos. I totally disagree with it because we have the responsibility to protect the endangered species and zoos plays an important role in educational purposes.

Regarding the responsibility to maintain the ecological system, some special animals which may become extinct should be protected in the zoo under special care. One of the reasons of extinction is the significant pollution nowadays that the endangered species cannot survive under the polluted environment. Therefore the zoos can provide the suitable conditions for these particular creatures for growth and breeding, until when they are strong enough to go back to the natural world. For instance, the global warming causes the death of the polar bears at north poles. Some zoos keep the polar bears to ensure they would not be extinct due to the temperature change globally.

In addition, visiting zoos is essential for educating children. Animals should not be kept in the cage instead they should live in a safari to ensure they have enough space. Moreover, younger kids can see the real creatures in zoos instead of seeing the virtual ones online since it is difficult for them to see the animals in the forests. For instance, they can learn a lot about the features of animals, how to protect them and conserve our natural environment, which is more meaningful than just obtaining knowledge on books.

In conclusion, zoos should be remained open because it serves as a channel to reserve the endangered animals. Furthermore, zoos visit is critical in teaching youngsters and promotion of environmental protection. In my opinion, it is necessary to keep zoos in our cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The response addresses both the conservation aspect and the educational value of zoos. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For example, the argument regarding polar bears is a bit simplistic, and the point about safari parks in the second body paragraph slightly contradicts your support for traditional zoos. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more nuanced reasoning rather than just stating the benefits. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the main ideas are relevant and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the idea of animal welfare and the educational benefits in the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but ensure that pronouns and cohesive markers are used to create a more natural, sophisticated flow between your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'endangered species', 'ecological system', and 'conserve'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'zoos should be remained open' (should remain open) and 'zoos visit' (zoo visits). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and you rely on some repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'animals' and 'zoos' too frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('zoos plays' instead of 'zoos play') and incorrect verb forms ('zoos should be remained'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that passive voice constructions are used accurately.
