IELTS Writing Task 2 question
We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is argued that because zoos are no longer necessary, they ought to be shut down.
For this, I completely disagree with this view I believe zoos still play a vital role in education and conservation, and closing them would have negative effects.
Overall, The primary reasons why zoos should remain open is their educational value. For many children and adults, a zoo is the only opportunity to see wild animals up close.
Watching animals on television or the internet cannot provide the same experience and emotional connection.
When students visit zoos on school trips, they learn about animal habitats, behavior and the importance of biodiversity. This firsthand experience helps to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourages the younger generation to care about wildlife protection.
Furthermore, modern zoos contribute significantly to conservation efforts. Many endangered species, such as pandas, tigers and certain types of turtles are bred in captivity in zoos because their natural habitats are being destroyed. Zoos also participate in global breeding programs and research projects aimed at reintroducing animals back into the wild. In addition, zoos provide a safe environment wild animals can't be left alone in surroundings. Therefore, closing zoos would damage these critical conservation programs and put more species at risk of extinction.
In conclusion, although some people believe that zoos are outdated, I am convinced that they are still essential. They educate the public and play a key role in protecting endangered animals. Instead of closing them, we should improve the conditions in zoos to ensure the well being of the animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a firm stance against closing zoos. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. You provide two main supporting arguments—educational value and conservation efforts—which are well-developed with relevant examples like school trips and breeding programs for endangered species. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction is more concise and avoids repetitive phrasing. While your ideas are relevant, adding a brief counter-argument or a more nuanced discussion of the 'conditions' mentioned in your conclusion would further strengthen the depth of your response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence 'In addition, zoos provide a safe environment wild animals can't be left alone in surroundings' is slightly disjointed and could benefit from better linking words to improve the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biodiversity', 'endangered species', and 'captivity' correctly. Your word choice is generally appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater precision. For instance, instead of 'negative effects', you could use 'detrimental consequences'. You also have a few minor errors in phrasing, such as 'the well being', which should be hyphenated as 'well-being'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Most of your sentences are clear, and your meaning is never in doubt. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'The primary reasons... is' (subject-verb agreement) and the run-on structure in the second paragraph. Additionally, the sentence 'For this, I completely disagree with this view I believe...' lacks proper punctuation between the two independent clauses. Focusing on sentence boundary punctuation and subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score.
